IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Some countries have laws that prohibit animals being used in circuses or other forms of entertainment because it is cruel to keep animals in an environment that can cause them stress.
Should all countries have laws to prevent animals being used in circuses and similar forms of entertainment?
SAMPLE ANSWER
There is growing concern about the ethical treatment of animals used in circuses and other entertainment industries. While some nations have implemented bans to protect these animals, others continue to permit such practices. In my opinion, all countries should introduce laws that prevent the use of animals for entertainment purposes, as these activities often involve cruelty and serve little educational or cultural value.
Firstly, animals in circuses are frequently subjected to inhumane conditions. They are often confined in small enclosures, transported for long periods, and trained through physical punishment or fear. Such treatment not only causes immense physical suffering but also emotional stress. Numerous studies have shown that animals in captivity exhibit signs of mental distress, such as repetitive behaviors and aggression, which are clear indicators of poor welfare.
Secondly, using animals in entertainment sends the wrong message, especially to younger audiences. It reinforces the idea that animals exist solely for human amusement, rather than as sentient beings with their own needs and rights. Instead, modern circuses can focus on human performances, which are equally, if not more, entertaining and ethical.
In conclusion, the use of animals in circuses and similar forms of entertainment is outdated and unjustifiable. To promote compassion and protect animal welfare, all countries should implement legislation that bans these practices and supports cruelty-free alternatives.
