IELTS WRITING TASK 2
In some countries, a few people earn extremely high salaries. Some people think that this is good for a country, while others believe the government should control salaries and limit the amount people can earn. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
SAMPLE ANSWER
In some nations, a small number of individuals earn exceptionally high salaries. While some argue that this benefits a country’s economy, others believe that income should be regulated by governments. Both views will be discussed before presenting a personal opinion.
On one hand, high salaries can have positive effects on a country. Firstly, individuals who earn large incomes often contribute significantly to tax revenues, which can be used to improve public services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure. Secondly, high-paying jobs can attract top talent from around the world, boosting innovation and competitiveness. For instance, countries like the United States have thrived partly because of the wealth generated by entrepreneurs and executives in sectors like technology and finance.
On the other hand, many believe that excessively high incomes lead to inequality and social unrest. When a small group of people holds the majority of a country’s wealth, it can create resentment among lower-income citizens. This disparity may lead to reduced social cohesion and a decline in overall quality of life. Therefore, some advocate for salary caps or progressive taxation to distribute wealth more fairly.
In my opinion, while limiting income might seem fair in theory, it could discourage ambition and drive among professionals. A better approach would be for governments to ensure fair taxation and invest in social programs that uplift the less privileged, rather than capping salaries.
In conclusion, although there are valid concerns about income inequality, allowing high earnings can benefit a country if balanced with strong social policies.
