IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Providing Internet access is just as important as other services, such as building roads, so governments should offer Internet access to all of their citizens at no cost.
SAMPLE ANSWER
In today’s digital age, some argue that providing free Internet access should be considered as essential as building roads and other public services. I strongly agree with this view, as the Internet plays a vital role in education, economic development, and access to essential services.
Firstly, the Internet is a powerful tool for education. In many rural or underprivileged areas, students lack access to quality educational resources. Free Internet can bridge this gap by enabling access to online courses, digital libraries, and learning platforms. Especially in times of crisis, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Internet has proven indispensable for remote learning.
Secondly, Internet access boosts economic opportunities. Many people now rely on the Internet for work, whether through remote jobs, freelancing, or running online businesses. Free access allows citizens, regardless of income, to participate in the digital economy, reducing unemployment and boosting national productivity.
Furthermore, governments increasingly offer services such as tax filing, healthcare appointments, and social welfare applications online. Without Internet access, many citizens are effectively excluded from these services, widening social inequality. By offering Internet for free, governments can ensure that everyone, regardless of background, has equal access to these fundamental resources.
In conclusion, just as roads connect people physically, the Internet connects them intellectually, economically, and socially. Providing free Internet access is not a luxury but a necessity in the modern world. Therefore, it should be prioritized alongside other essential public services.
