IELTS Writing Task 2

Nowadays, urban developers are consistently aiming to allocate specific parts of the city for distinct purposes. Some areas may be designated for educational institutions, while others may be earmarked for residential purposes. Personally, I support this approach, despite its potential drawbacks.

On one hand, adopting this urban planning strategy may lead to negative consequences. One such consequence is the heightening of traffic congestion within cities. For instance, students residing in the outer parts often have to commute long distances to reach centrally located schools, resulting in a significant increase in the number of daily commuters. Additionally, individuals in rural areas may face challenges accessing essential facilities. For example, if they wish to purchase furniture, they might need to travel considerable distances, incurring substantial transportation costs, unlike their counterparts in more sprawling urban centres who enjoy better access to such amenities.

On the other hand, implementing this zoning plan in urban areas has its advantages, particularly in preventing overpopulation in specific locations. The relocation of factories to suburban areas tends to attract workers to live nearby rather than in the city centre. For instance, if the Iranian government had not allowed large companies to operate in Tehran’s central areas, more citizens might have opted to reside in the countryside, increasing the overpopulation issues.

Moreover, this strategy can contribute to a reduction in pollution levels in cities. The concentration of shops and offices in urban centres tends to increase environmental pollution. To counter this, some governments, like British Columbia in Vancouver, designate specific regions outside the metropolitan zone, such as near the airport, for commercial activities, thereby significantly decreasing the pollution caused by these businesses.

In conclusion, despite potential dissenting opinions on the idea of allocating specific regions for particular purposes, I wholeheartedly support it. This approach not only mitigates population density but also curtails pollution levels in the central areas of urban environments.
