Some countries have legal ages at which people can drink. Other countries believe not having strict laws is a better policy. Discuss both sides and give your own opinion.
SAMPLE ANSWER
In many parts of the world, legal drinking ages are established to control alcohol consumption, especially among young people. However, some countries take a more relaxed approach, leaving such decisions to individuals and families. Both perspectives have their merits and drawbacks.
Supporters of legal drinking ages argue that these laws help protect young people from the negative effects of alcohol. Scientific research shows that the brain continues to develop into the mid-20s, and alcohol can interfere with this process. Moreover, early exposure to drinking is linked to increased risks of addiction, accidents, and poor academic performance. Legal restrictions can also help authorities enforce responsible behavior in public places, reducing crime and road accidents caused by underage drinking.
On the other hand, countries without strict laws often emphasize education and personal responsibility over legal control. They argue that strict laws can sometimes make alcohol more appealing as a “forbidden fruit,” encouraging rebellion. In cultures where alcohol is introduced in moderation within family settings, young people may develop a healthier relationship with drinking. Furthermore, enforcing drinking age laws can be challenging and may divert police resources from more serious issues.
In my opinion, a balanced approach is ideal. While setting a legal drinking age helps protect youth, it should be paired with education on responsible drinking. Encouraging open family discussions and school-based awareness can reduce harm more effectively than strict laws alone.
