Computers today can quickly and accurately translate languages, therefore, it is a waste of time to learn a foreign language.

In today’s technology-driven world, translation software and apps have become incredibly advanced, leading some to argue that learning a foreign language is no longer necessary. While I agree that computers offer valuable support in communication, I strongly disagree that learning another language is a waste of time.
Firstly, language is more than just words — it is deeply connected to culture, emotion, and expression. Human communication involves tone, context, and subtle nuances that machines often fail to capture. For example, idioms or culturally rooted expressions are frequently mistranslated or misunderstood by even the most advanced software. Only a human learner can truly grasp and use these effectively.
Secondly, learning a foreign language opens up opportunities beyond basic translation. It enhances cognitive skills such as memory and problem-solving, and it allows people to build deeper connections when traveling, working abroad, or interacting in multicultural environments. A translated sentence may help in ordering food or asking directions, but it cannot replace the genuine bond that comes from speaking someone’s native language.
Moreover, reliance on machines can lead to complacency. In situations where technology fails or is unavailable, knowing the language becomes a practical necessity. Additionally, many employers value language skills, especially in global business environments where clear, personal communication is crucial.
In conclusion, while computers are useful for translation, they cannot replace the rich, human experience of learning and using a foreign language. It remains a valuable and rewarding skill.
