IELTS WRITING TASK 2

IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Some people think that criminals should remain in prison, while others think that they need medical and psychological assistance.
What is your opinion?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Some people think that the imprisonment of criminals is the only way to prevent crimes. Others believe that we should focus on rehabilitating criminals rather than focusing on crime prevention. They believe that prisons only make things worse. Instead, medical and psychological rehabilitation is what they suggest. This is a very sensitive issue. In my opinion, not all criminals need medical and psychological help. I will explain my reasons below.
We have to consider that some crimes are not caused by medical or psychological illnesses. In fact, some crimes are caused by socioeconomic factors. For example, people steal to have money, and at times, people kill others in the heat of anger and passion. Some crimes are even accidental. For instance, many intoxicated drivers have no intention of hitting people, but they are still charged as criminals. These types of crimes cannot be prevented by giving the criminals medical attention.
In law, the court decides if a person is psychologically unstable. People with this designation are given the proper therapy needed and are often required to stay in a mental institution. Similarly, counselling is also given to prisoners. Criminals occasionally have psychological tests and checkups to have their mental state assessed. This proves that convicts are given help inside prison. This system has been proven to be accurate and effective, showing that not all criminals have medical or psychological problems.
Realistically speaking, prisons are often not as bad as they seem. The lives of some prisoners have changed for the better. For instance, some prisoners have formed choirs, dance groups, orchestras and religious groups. In other words, criminals behind prison walls have the chance to experience life again. In these cases, criminals just need to be jailed for them to transform their lives, even without the medical and psychological assistance.
Given the discussion above, clinical treatment may not be an effective programme for all criminals because some crimes are not caused by psychological problems, not all criminals have mental illness, and some criminals only need jail time for them to change their ways. Instead, wholesome programmes for prisoners should be provided so that prisoners can have more positive and rehabilitative experience.
