IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Rising university fees and scarce employment prospects for graduates have led some people to say that universities should not teach arts subject.
SAMPLE ANSWER
The rising cost of university education, combined with limited employment opportunities for graduates, has led some to question the value of pursuing arts subjects in higher education. They argue that universities should prioritize more career-oriented courses that provide immediate job prospects. However, I believe that arts subjects still hold significant value, and universities should continue to offer them.
First, the arts foster critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills, all of which are essential in a wide range of professions. While it may seem that arts graduates have fewer direct career paths compared to those in fields like engineering or medicine, the skills they acquire are transferable and valued in many industries, such as marketing, public relations, and media.
Additionally, universities are not solely training grounds for immediate employment but also spaces for intellectual development. The study of history, philosophy, literature, and the arts enriches society as a whole, preserving culture and promoting a deeper understanding of human experiences. It is important that education encourages diversity in thought and subject matter, providing students with the opportunity to pursue their passions and contribute to cultural and social progress.
While it is true that higher education costs are rising, rather than eliminating arts subjects, universities should work towards offering more affordable education and improving career services for all disciplines. A balanced approach that includes both practical and academic pursuits can help graduates succeed in a rapidly changing job market.
In conclusion, universities should continue to teach arts subjects, as they provide valuable skills and contribute to the intellectual and cultural fabric of society.
