IELTS WRITING TASK 2
The modern life is harmful for people as it brings a lot of pressure and reduces the quality of relationships. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Some people think that modern life causes harm to people due to stress and the deterioration of people’s relationships. Personally, I completely agree with this opinion for the reasons presented below.
To begin with, people living in the modern world, especially those living in big cities, have to deal with a high level of stress and pressure owing to heavy workloads and increasing living costs. For instance, in the space of only 20 years, the average amount of time that people living in Ho Chi Minh city in Vietnam spend working has increased from 6 to 10 hours per day, while the living cost has risen by 50%. This is also the case for many other major cities, like New York or Beijing, where the cost of living increases along with the working hours. As a result, people nowadays have to bear greater burden than before.
People’s relationships also suffer due to the increasing pressure in modern life. As many people now have to spend more time at work, and some even do multiple jobs to make ends meet, they have little time left at the end of a day for family or friends. Less time spent with each other means reduced face-to-face communication, and problems in daily life may not be frequently discussed. As a result, one’s satisfaction level with their relationships might be reduced.
In conclusion, people nowadays have to cope with high levels of stress and pressure due to the increasing living costs and working hours. Their relationship quality is also reduced as they have less time to maintain their connections with others.
