IELTS WRITING TASK 2
IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Women and men are commonly seen as having different strengths and weaknesses. Is it right to exclude males or females from certain professions because of their gender? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
SAMPLE ANSWER
Excluding individuals from certain professions based solely on their gender is unfair and discriminatory. While men and women may have different physical characteristics or social roles in some cultures, these differences should not be used as a basis for barring someone from a job. Talent, skill, and personal attributes, rather than gender, should be the deciding factors for employment.
For instance, it is a common stereotype that women are less suited for physically demanding jobs, such as construction or firefighting. However, many women have excelled in these fields, proving that physical strength is not solely determined by gender. For example, women like Sarah Thomas, the first woman to swim across the English Channel four times, demonstrate that women can excel in physically demanding activities.
Conversely, there are assumptions that men are less nurturing or incapable of caring for children, which can limit their opportunities in fields like nursing or early childhood education. However, male nurses and teachers contribute significantly to the profession, offering valuable perspectives and skills.
Excluding individuals from certain professions based on gender reinforces harmful stereotypes and denies people the chance to pursue their interests and abilities. It is essential to evaluate candidates based on their qualifications, experiences, and potential rather than preconceived notions about gender roles. Only by promoting gender equality in all professions can society fully benefit from the diverse talents and perspectives that both men and women have to offer.
In conclusion, gender should not determine career opportunities. Discrimination based on gender is unjust, and opportunities should be available to everyone, regardless of sex.
