In the past, many people had skills such as making their own clothes and doing repairs to things in the house. In many countries, nowadays, skills like these are disappearing. Why do you think this is happening? How far is this situation true in your country? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

In the past, people had a wide range of practical skills, such as sewing their own clothes, repairing household items, or even growing their own food. However, in many countries today, these skills are gradually disappearing. This trend can be attributed to several factors, including technological advancements, the rise of consumer culture, and changes in lifestyle and education.

One of the primary reasons for the decline in these skills is the rapid technological development that has made many tasks easier and faster. For example, the invention of machines like washing machines and dishwashers has greatly reduced the need for people to perform manual chores, such as washing clothes or dishes by hand. Similarly, ready-made clothing and affordable household products are now widely available, making it less necessary for people to learn skills like sewing or repairing items themselves. This technological convenience, while beneficial in many ways, has led to a diminished focus on self-sufficiency.

Moreover, the rise of a consumer-oriented society has made it easier for people to purchase new items rather than repairing or maintaining old ones. In many countries, there is a growing tendency to replace broken appliances or clothes instead of fixing them, as it is often cheaper and faster. This “throwaway culture” has further diminished the value placed on traditional skills.

Additionally, modern education systems tend to prioritize academic subjects and professional skills over practical, hands-on learning. As a result, younger generations may not have the opportunity to acquire these traditional skills, leading to a decline in their practice.

In my country, this trend is quite evident. People now prefer to buy new clothes or hire professional repair services rather than attempt to mend things themselves. However, there is a growing movement to revive these skills, particularly among those who are more environmentally conscious and want to reduce waste. Workshops and online tutorials have made it easier for people to learn practical skills once again.

In conclusion, the disappearance of traditional skills can be attributed to technological advances, consumer culture, and changes in education. While this trend is widespread, there are efforts underway in many places to revive these skills, driven by environmental concerns and a desire for greater self-sufficiency.
