IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Fast-food companies should not be allowed to give away free toys with their food. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
SAMPLE ANSWER
I agree with the argument that fast-food companies should not be allowed to give away free toys with their food. While these promotions are often seen as a way to attract young customers, they have several negative consequences that outweigh their benefits.
Firstly, the practice of offering free toys primarily targets children, who are more likely to be influenced by such marketing tactics. This can lead to unhealthy eating habits, as children may associate fast food with fun and enjoyment due to the toy. This encourages them to consume junk food regularly, which contributes to childhood obesity and related health issues like diabetes and heart disease. For instance, studies have shown that children who receive toys with fast food are more likely to choose high-calorie, low-nutrient meals.
Secondly, the environmental impact of these toys is another concern. Many of the toys are made of plastic, which contributes to pollution and waste. Often, these toys are discarded shortly after being used, adding to the growing problem of plastic waste in landfills and oceans.
In conclusion, while free toys may initially seem like an attractive marketing strategy, the long-term health and environmental costs are too great. Banning such promotions could encourage healthier eating habits in children and reduce unnecessary plastic waste. Governments should regulate these practices to promote better health and environmental sustainability.
