Some people say that the main purpose of television should be education, while other says it should be for entertainment only. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

SAMPLE ANSWER

People are divided on the purposefulness of television. Some believe that TV should primarily be for education, whereas others opine that TV should be for entertainment. This essay intends to analyse both perspectives. I, however, believe that television should equally fulfil the role of educator and entertainer.

Television has been given considerable importance in many countries as a source and a tool of teaching. Television is used for formal and non-formal education. To support formal education, television can be attached with school curriculum and time-tables. It can enhance quality in education and reduce dependence on verbal teaching and teachers. It can stimulate learning and give opportunity for mass education.

In non-formal education, television can directly or indirectly teach many things. Television benefits the masses by making them conscious of the environment, their rights, duties and privileges. It is a source of teaching etiquettes, language skills, hobbies, social relations and religious beliefs.

On the other hand, the role of television in entertainment is indubitable. As in this contemporary, busy world, majority of people lead a stressful life, and they require a sort of passive entertainment to feel relaxed. There are countless channels on TV providing entertainment in the form of soaps, video songs, movies, and game shows. Thus, every person irrespective of his age group can find something interesting to see on TV. Moreover, today smart TV is capable to record our favorite program, which we can enjoy in our free time. Same way, it also offers thousands of games to play.

I believe that TV is simultaneously doing both – entertainment and education. Even the daily soaps that we see have some social education. So the role of TV is overlapping as far as education and entertainment are concerned.

To sum up, television is equally meant for education and entertainment both. To use it solely for education or for entertainment would be wrong.
