IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Some believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school Programmes (for example, working for a charity, improving the neighborhood or teaching sports to younger children). To what extent do you agree or disagree?
SAMPLE ANSWER
The idea of incorporating compulsory unpaid community service into high school programs has sparked considerable debate. While some argue that it could foster a sense of responsibility and social awareness among students, others believe it may be counterproductive if mandated.
On one hand, compulsory community service can instill valuable life skills in teenagers. Engaging in charitable activities or contributing to local projects can teach them about teamwork, empathy, and the importance of giving back to society. For instance, volunteering at a local food bank or tutoring younger students can enhance students’ communication skills and boost their self-confidence. Additionally, such experiences can provide practical insights into various professions and help students explore potential career paths.
However, enforcing community service as a mandatory requirement may have drawbacks. Imposing obligations on students could lead to resentment and diminish the intrinsic motivation to contribute to society. When students are coerced into participating in community service, their engagement might lack enthusiasm, reducing the overall impact of their efforts. Moreover, compulsory service could place additional pressure on students who are already balancing academic responsibilities, extracurricular activities, and personal commitments.
Ultimately, while the benefits of community service are clear, mandating it as part of the high school curriculum may not be the most effective approach. Instead, schools could encourage voluntary participation through incentives and integrate service learning into academic subjects to naturally foster a sense of civic duty without coercion. This way, students can choose to engage in meaningful service activities that align with their interests and passions, leading to a more genuine and fulfilling experience.
