IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Some people believe that violent films are bad for you and encourage people to be violent. Others argue that violence and films are unrelated because violence existed before films. Which of these opinions do you agree with, and to what extent do you agree? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.
SAMPLE ANSWER
The debate over whether violent films contribute to societal violence or are simply a reflection of pre-existing aggression is multifaceted. I lean towards the view that while violent films alone do not directly cause violence, they can contribute to a culture of aggression when combined with other risk factors.
Violent films often portray aggressive behavior in a way that can desensitize viewers, especially if they are exposed to such content frequently. Research suggests that repeated exposure to media violence can lead to a normalization of aggressive behavior and diminish empathy towards victims of violence. For example, studies have shown that individuals who watch violent media regularly may develop more aggressive attitudes and may become less sensitive to real-life violence.
However, it is crucial to recognize that violence has existed long before the advent of films and is influenced by a myriad of social, psychological, and economic factors. Historical evidence indicates that human societies have always had forms of violence, independent of media influence. Hence, while films can be a contributing factor, they are not the sole cause of societal violence.
The key is understanding that violent films can act as a catalyst rather than the root cause. They can exacerbate existing tendencies or contribute to a broader culture of aggression, particularly among vulnerable individuals. Thus, it is essential to approach media consumption with a critical mindset and to address underlying social issues that contribute to violence.
In summary, while violent films are not the primary cause of violence, they can play a role in reinforcing and normalizing aggressive behavior. Therefore, it is important to balance media exposure with other forms of engagement that promote empathy and social responsibility.
