IELTS Writing Task 2

Nowadays, in spite of having children, many women work in addition to their husbands. The question of who is to care for the children if both parents are employed is a sensitive one, as, when both parents are working, children are raised in a poorer environment.

When looking around today, more childcare facilities offer whole day care, so that parents can pick up their children after work. The children therefore do not experience the same love for these hours as they would if their mother took care of them. As children get older, the situation can worsen. Many primary and especially secondary schools end early in the day. Children are therefore unsupervised for long hours. This can lead to children making bad choices or to loneliness. Therefore, it is clear the development of children can be negatively impacted when both parents are working.

However, the issue is not this simple, as provisions have been made to decrease the negative effects. In many countries, there are not only day care facilities available, but also all-day schools have been created to ensure that children are taken care of when their parents are working. Furthermore, these facilities also lead to children being in stronger contact with children of the same age, which can benefit their development.

In conclusion, while negative impacts on development can be seen, if appropriate measures are taken, a child’s development can be impacted positively through other means, such as ensuring the time families can spend together is used well.
