IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Electric vehicles are far less damaging to the environment when compared to gasoline cars. This is why governments all around the world should promote the manufacturing and use of electric cars.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
SAMPLE ANSWER
In assessing the environmental impact of electric vehicles (EVs) versus gasoline cars, it is evident that EVs offer several advantages that justify governmental promotion of their manufacturing and use.
Firstly, EVs contribute significantly less to air pollution compared to traditional gasoline cars. With zero tailpipe emissions, EVs help improve urban air quality and reduce health risks associated with pollutants like particulate matter and nitrogen oxides. This is particularly crucial in densely populated areas where air pollution levels can exceed health guidelines.
Secondly, from a greenhouse gas emissions perspective, EVs demonstrate lower overall emissions when considering the entire lifecycle — from manufacturing to end-of-life. While electricity production methods vary globally, the trend towards renewable energy sources means EVs have the potential to become even cleaner over time. In contrast, gasoline cars emit greenhouse gases directly during operation, contributing to climate change and local air quality issues.
Moreover, the advancement of EV technology aligns with global efforts to decarbonize transportation sectors. Governments supporting EV manufacturing and adoption can accelerate innovation and drive economies of scale, making EVs more affordable and accessible to consumers. This can also foster job creation in renewable energy and automotive sectors, promoting economic growth while addressing environmental goals.
However, challenges such as battery production’s environmental impact, infrastructure limitations, and the energy mix used for electricity generation need consideration. Governments must ensure that policies supporting EVs are holistic, addressing these challenges through regulations, incentives for sustainable practices, and infrastructure investments.
In conclusion, the environmental benefits of electric vehicles compared to gasoline cars are clear and compelling. Governments worldwide should indeed prioritize promoting the manufacturing and use of EVs through comprehensive policies that address environmental sustainability, public health, and economic growth. This approach can contribute significantly to global efforts towards a cleaner and more sustainable future.
