Sample Answer:-

The table illustrates the performance of three different branches of a chain of bakers in three different locations in London for the year 2015. It is evident that the best performer is the shop in Covent Garden, which with 642 transactions a day on average has at least 100 more transactions than oxford circus ad more than double from St John’s wood. Covent Garden is also ahead in terms of average transaction value (ATV), with £7.58 per transaction compared to Oxford Circus’s £4.51 and St John’s wood’s £5.01.

On average, eat-in and take – away transactions are almost equal in each store, with take – away transactions edging slightly ahead in two of them. St John’s Wood is the only exception, with eat – in transactions surpassing take – away by 31.

The table also gives us information about the most popular item in each branch, revealing that the shopping habits of customers in each area are widely varied: Convent Garden’s best seller is the croissant, while Convent Garden customers favour lattes and St John’s Wood’s customers prefer strawberry tarts.

Overall, it is clear that the Convent Garden branch is the company’s most profitable store, with the highest number of transactions and ATV. St John’s Wood, on the other hand, lags far behind, despite the fact that its ATV is slightly higher than Oxford Circus.

GENERAL WRITING TASK 1:-

You recently travelled by train on a long journey and you experienced various problems.
Write a letter to the train company’s head office. In your letter,

– Give the details of your journey, including the date, time and where you sat
– Explain the problems that happened and express your dissatisfaction
– ask about what action will be taken to improve the service

Sample Answer:-

Dear Sir,
Last week on the twenty-first of Amy, I travelled from Rome to Berlin as a passenger on the train Express 302, presumably under your management I experienced several inconveniences and problems throughout the long and strenuous journey and I would like to make an official complaint.

Firstly, the train was delayed one hour due to a malfunction with the doors. In addition to this, the train had to stop several times throughout the trip for a lengthy amount of time due to other technological problems. As a result, I arrived in Berlin three hours later than initially planned, which drastically changed my personal schedule. Secondly, the train was severally overbooked, and I was switched from first class to second class, where I was made to sit among a loud and obnoxious family. In addition, there was no internet available as advertised, and I was unable to complete some important business. Finally, when I went to complain calmly about the situation, the on-train personnel were unnecessarily rude.

I hope that you feel that I have a terrible experience with your company and I look forward to reading in your reply about what action you intend to take.

Some people think that developed countries have a higher responsibility to combat climate change than developing counties. Others believe that all countries should have the same responsibilities towards protecting the environment.
Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

Sample Answer:-

With environmental concerns growing continually in the last few decades, the question of what each country can do to protect the environment has become more and more prominent. Some people believe that all countries around the world are equally responsible when it comes to combating climate change. Others, however, think that developed countries have greater responsibilities than developing countries.

It is indubitable that climate change is a universal, global problem; therefore, any solution to it will need to be on a global scale, too. Furthermore, developing countries are more likely to suffer as a result of climate change, so they should be just as motivated as developed countries to help the environment.

On the other hand, developed countries are clearly more capable of taking the lead in combating the climate change and improving their carbon footprint, as they have fewer pressing concerns than developing countries. Not only that, but they are also going to have a more marked effect if they reduce their emissions, since developed nations have always been far ahead in terms of pollution-and are in fact mostly to blame for it. Finally, developed countries have the responsibility to set the example for others, introducing changes to encourage the rest to do the same.

Therefore, I firmly believe that while every country should be accountable for their emissions and contribute to combating climate change, developed countries have a slightly bigger responsibility to take action than developing countries, as they have both the means and the reasons to do so – as well as the ability to create a formidable wave of change in attitudes towards the environment around the world.

Where are you from?
I belong to Jaipur which is in the state of Rajasthan.

What do you do?
I’ve recently completed my graduate degree in business administration, and at the moment, I work for Infosys as a business consultant.

Do you play video games?
I play video games very occasionally, if a certain friend has purchased a new gaming console, or a new gaming arcade has opened up in the city. Otherwise, I am not too fond of playing video games, now. Also, I do find much time for video gaming.

Did you used to play video games earlier?
Yes, until I got so busy, I used to play a lot of different video games with my friends. As children we used to play the basic versions made available by Nintendo and similar companies. Then, a few years after college we started playing multiplayer video games such as Counter Strike and GTA in gaming arenas and arcades. I must say, it was a lot of fun.

Are there any drawbacks of playing video games?
Most video games these days have amazing graphics and audio effects. The game play is very smooth and realistic, as opened to how it used to be in video games from 20 years ago. So, the entire gameplay experience is very engaging and engrossing. Most games are addictive and very time consuming, too. So, if an office going person starts playing video games too frequently, either his career, or his sleep cycle is likely to get hampered.

Do violent video games affect children negatively?
Yes, violent video games can affect children negatively. Because video games are highly engaging due to their high definition graphics and sounds, children may become too engrossed and lose touch with reality. After long hours of game play, their impressionable minds may not be able to tell the difference between the virtual world and the real world, and they may replicate the violent moves of the video game in real life. This is known as becoming desensitized to violence and it can prove quite dangerous.

I am very fond of road trips. Since my childhood, I have always enjoyed travelling around the country by road. After I learnt how to drive a car, I started enjoying going on long drives by myself, as well as with friends. When we were all a little less busy in our jobs and businesses, we used to go on long drives very frequently. With time, the frequency of our long drives has noticeably reduced, but if I were given a day off, I would most definitely like to fuel up my car and hit the road once more. There are quite a few place is the Polo forest, about four hours’ drive from my city. I would love to visit this forest with my group of friends and all our families. Polo forest has much to offer to everyone, and is usually not crowded. I would like for us to start off early in the morning, reach by mid-morning, and park our cars in a shaded place. We’d walk to the ancient Shiva temple in the forest, sit there for a while, and then trek through the lush hills behind it. From these hills we’d enjoy the view of the gushing stream below, and lie down on our picnic rains, we might even be lucky enough to see waterfalls. In that case I would definitely like to make the most of them, by standing underneath for the longest time. Then, after drying up, wed either dig into our picnic baskets for packed sandwiches and wafers, or we’d walk down to the nearby restaurant and eat streaming hot traditional Indian food. Stomachs filled up, and hearts happy, we’d all be homeward bound, already planning our next trip to Polo. At the end of the day I’m sure I’d feel satiated and relaxed, albeit a little exhausted.

PART – 3 FOLLOW UP QUESTION ANSWER

What do people in your country like to do if they are not busy?
When people in my country are not busy, they enjoy visiting relatives, hanging out with friends, catching up on old times with people they have not been in touch with for long, and relaxing at home. People also like to go to mall for shopping, sometimes people enjoy going to watch movies with their family members, and at other times people like stepping out for meals at good restaurants.

Do you like short holidays or long holidays?
I prefer many short holidays throughout the year, than just one long holiday once a year. Holiday serve as breaks from work, and I use them to help us return to work refreshed on Monday mornings, similarly short holidays help us rid our minds and bodies of the built up exhaustion of work. When I take a long holiday I have a tough time convincing myself to get back to work, and then I feel guilty taking more short holidays. Instead, if I take short holidays every now and then, I have noticed that my productivity at work increases manifold.

Do you think today’s lifestyles give people enough time for leisure?
I think people need more time for leisure than their lifestyle today allow them to take out. In earlier times, it is believed that people used to be happier, more relaxed, and rarely stressed out in general. This is because they had a lot of leisure time to themselves, which they often spent simply relaxing and watching the world go by. Even now, this can be seen in small villages. However, most of us in cities have forgotten how to make the most of our leisure time, because we hardly get any.
