ACADEMIC WRITING TASK 1:-

The bar chart below shows the number of students in a UK university enrolled in three different courses from 2001-2004. Identify the main trends and summarize the data.

Sample Answer:-

The bar chart shows students attending three different courses. Psychology, Economics and Finance over a four year period, from 2001 to 2004, in a UK university.

If we analyze the data, we can see several trends emerging. First, Finance emerged as the most popular course showing a steady increase in number of students enrolling for it from 2001 to 2004. Second, the number of students opting for Psychology stayed almost the same where as student numbers For Economics fluctuated.

Looking more closely at the bar chart, it is noted that the number of students studying Finance grew substantially from approximately 1.8 million in 2001 and 2002 to an unprecedented 5 million in 2004, topping the three courses. In contrast, student enrolments for Economics nearly doubled from approximately 2.3 million in 2001 to over 4 million in 2002. However, these numbers fluctuated over the next two years and settled at approximately 2.7 million in 2004.

Turning to the Psychology course, it continued to maintain its popularity amongst students with student numbers of around 3.5 to 4.5 million in the four year period. As compared to the other courses, it had the highest number of students from 2001 to 2003: 4.2 million in 2001, 4.3 million in 2002 and 3.5 million in 2003. The highest numbers seen in 2004, however these were second to those of the Finance course.

In conclusion then, one can say that over the four-year period from 2001 to 2004, there has been an increase in overall numbers of students attending all three courses.

General Writing Task 1:-

You are moving to your native country and you have some furniture which you are willing to sell as you will not be able to carry it. Write a letter to your friend who is interested in buying a piece of furniture. In your letter

Describe the piece of furniture
Explain why your friend might be interested in it
Suggest an appropriate way to carry it

Sample Answer:-

Dear………,

You are Aware about my plans to go back to India and resettle there to take care of our family business. It took me a lot of time to sort out certain things regarding education of my children and sale of my landed assets. I am through with all that now, and the only things I am left with that I am left with that I shall not be carrying home are my furniture and assorted items.

The item include two sets of leather upholstered sofa, two double beds with side tables, an 8-chair dinning set with related accessories, six single-seater kitchen tables, two TV sets and other assorted items like robotic cleaner etc.

These are precisely the items that you need, since you are now to the country and have only recently shifted to a family accommodation. All these items are almost mew and precisely that is why I don’t want to give them to anybody else.

You may decide on the price that you will like to pay. You have to consider how you carry them home. The smaller items like TV sets can be carried in your cars. I suggest taking the services of Movers and Packers for the large items.

Come over for dinner this Saturday and we can work out all details.

Writing Task 2 (AC+GT):-

Some people say material possessions are very useful in bringing us happiness, but others argue that they are useless in terms of providing happiness.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion and reasons.

Sample Answer:-

The pursuit of happiness is an everlasting human endeavour in all societies. However happiness is probably the most elusive thing in the world and when defining it, people often hold widely different views. In my opinion, although the definitions of happiness may vary, they can fall into two broad categories, which will be discussed below.

Some people think they can obtain happiness through acquisition. Their lives are an status. A typical example is reflected in the activities of a shrewd businessman, who is in the habit of rushing through life, being on the go from morning till night, motivated by anything that sounds profitable or lucrative. But the sad thing is that only a few of them can become millionaires after years of striving. A more brutal truth is that many rich people are so obsessed with possessing and retaining their money that it is hard for them to relax and enjoy themselves. Little wonder that some big shots committed suicide because they longed for happiness in another world.

On the other hand, there are some people in the world who achieve happiness through helping others and contributing to the whole society. They are more often ordinary citizens who understand that true happiness comes from giving rather than taking. By devoting themselves to the cause of helping the poor and the disabled, they feel an inner bliss that accompanies them at every moment of their lives. Laborious and painstaking as it is, they are determined to overcome every stumbling block in the way because they are convinced that giving a helping hand to others is a spiritually rewarding act. For instance, we all have the experience of feeling fulfilled and gratified when we have successfully solved a knotty problem for others. It is this kind of charity and generosity that makes our lives rich, meaningful and happy.

To conclude, only through contribution, rather than acquisition, can people actually find themselves immersed in a feeling of happiness. In other words, happiness lies not in anything we possess, but in the act and attitude of helping others.

Where do you come from?
I am from Pharwara.

Do you like robots?
Yes I like robots as they can do so much for us these days. There are simple robots to clean the houses and sophisticated ones to perform surgeries.

What kind of robot would you like to have?
Recently, I have heard about a robot that cleans your home. I would like to buy one. It is like an automatic vacuum cleaner that picks up the dirt from all the nooks and corners.

Will robots change society significantly?
Yes, robots will bring changes in society. In fact, they have already done so. Most of the jobs that were done manually earlier are now performed with the help of robotics and with more precision.

Do you play any indoor games?
Yes, I play carom board and cards with my siblings and parents.

Do you prefer to play indoor games or outdoor games?
It depends on the weather outside. On hot summer afternoons, I play indoor games. But, when the weather is good, I play cricket and badminton outside with my friends.

What indoor games did you play when you were a child?
I played carom board, Ludo and snakes and ladders as a child.

Is there any particular indoor game that you like (when you were a child)?
I liked Lido and snakes and ladders.

What sorts of indoor games do children play now?
Nowadays, children are of the digital era. They play electronic games on the computer.

Do you play video games?
Yes, I play Mario and Tetris only. Sometimes I feel I have wasted a lot of time on these two games.

Is it good for young people to play video games?
Yes, video games are good, but only if played in a limit. These introduce children to computer technology, and teach strategy building skills.

We all need to share many things in our day to day life. I also share many things with my siblings and friends. Here I would like to talk about something I shared with my friend, Rohan. I shared my books and notes with him. It so happened that just 15 days before our +2 final exams, Rohan lost his whole school bag. All his books and noted were in the bag. He kept it in the school ground as he wanted to play cricket for some time. After the game, he could not find his bag anywhere. He looked everywhere and asked everyone who was there, but no one knew anything about it. Someone had obviously stolen it. Actually, he used to always stand first and his notes were very precious. He was literally on the verge of tears. I told him not to panic and offered to share all my notes and books with him till the exams. Fortunately, he lives in my neighbourhood. So, sharing all these books and notes with him was easy. Most of my notes were copied from his notebooks only. I realized that sharing things with others give happiness. Sharing, my notes with Rohan, strengthened our bonds of friendship. It helped me also. Because I had to share my books, I studied them within my time. Normally, I have a habit of procrastination. I always study for my exams at the 11th hour. But this time, I studies in time and was well prepared. We both passed with flying colours.

PART – 3 DISCUSSION

Do people in your country (or, you) prefer to share public transport or do they (you) prefer to use private transport?
Well, it depends on the financial status of the people. Those who can afford like to use their own private transport. Others prefer public transport. It also depends on the availability and comfort of public transport. Ever since, the AC buses have improved their frequency to Chandigarh, I prefer to travel on those than going by my car.

Do many people in your country share their home with other or do they mostly live alone?
Most people live in their own home or live in a rented house. But they don’t share their home with anybody. Students share apartments, if they study away from their home town.

Do you think there are any advantages to sharing your home with other (non-family) people?
If you can get along well with other people, then there are advantages. But if there are conflicts, it can be a bad experience. Advantages are that the expenses can be shared. So, it becomes cheaper.

Would you ever share your food with someone else?
Many times, I have shared my tiffin with my friends. Yes, I would readily share my food with others.
