IELTS Speaking Test

When do people in your country usually retire?

Most people in my country retire around the age of 60 or 65. That’s the standard age for government employees, though some in private jobs may retire earlier or later, depending on their situation.

Should everyone retire?

I don’t think so. Some people still feel active and enjoy working, even in their 60s. If they are healthy and willing, they should be able to continue.

What are the reasons that people do not retire?

Many people don’t retire because of financial reasons. Others just love what they do and feel bored without work. Some also want to stay mentally active.

IELTS Speaking Test

Will retirement ages keep getting later?

Yes, I think so. People are living longer and staying healthier, so many governments are increasing the retirement age to match that.

What do retired people do in your country?

Most retired people spend time with family, go for walks, or join local clubs. Some also do part-time work or volunteer to stay active.

Do people in your country often copy each other?

Yes, definitely. People often copy fashion, trends, or even how others speak. Social media makes this even more common now.

How has technology changed how people copy each other?

Technology has made it much easier. With social media, people see what others are doing and start copying styles, ideas, or even content in just seconds.

Is it important for people to copy each other?

Sometimes, yes. It helps people learn and stay up to date. But I think people should also try to be original and not just follow the crowd.

What laws about plagiarism are there in your country?

Plagiarism is taken seriously here, especially in schools and universities. If someone copies work without giving credit, they can face penalties or even be disqualified.

Do you think intellectual property theft will become more common in the future?

Unfortunately, yes. As more content is shared online, it’s easier to steal ideas or designs. I think stronger laws and awareness are needed to stop it.

One situation I clearly remember was when I promised my younger sister that I would attend her school’s annual function. She had been selected to perform a classical dance in front of a big audience, including parents, teachers, and students. She was extremely nervous but also excited, and she wanted me to be there to support her.

The function was scheduled on a weekday evening, and unfortunately, I had an important client presentation at work the same day. It seemed difficult to manage both, but I had promised her that I would come no matter what. I didn’t want to break her trust, especially since she was counting on me.

I spoke to my manager well in advance and worked extra hours the previous day to complete the presentation early. On the day of the event, I rushed straight from the office to her school. I arrived just a few minutes before her performance began and found a seat in the middle row. The moment she spotted me in the audience, her face lit up with joy and relief.

It was an important promise because she has always looked up to me, and I know how much it meant for her to feel supported. It wasn’t just about showing up—it was about being present when she needed encouragement and confidence.

After keeping my promise, I felt incredibly happy and fulfilled. Seeing her perform so confidently made me feel proud. More importantly, it strengthened our bond as siblings. It reminded me how even a small act of keeping a promise can leave a deep impact on someone’s life.

IELTS Speaking Test

Do you think it’s important to keep promises? Why or why not?

Yes, I strongly believe that keeping promises is extremely important. Promises are a reflection of our honesty and integrity. When someone makes a promise and follows through, it builds trust and shows that they are dependable. In both personal and professional relationships, being reliable is key to maintaining respect. On the other hand, breaking promises can damage relationships and make people lose confidence in you.

Why do some people break their promises?

There can be several reasons why people break promises. Sometimes it’s unintentional—they may genuinely forget or face unexpected situations that prevent them from fulfilling their word. However, in other cases, people might make promises just to please others at the moment, without seriously considering whether they can keep them. Lack of responsibility, fear of conflict, or even selfishness can also lead to broken promises.

What kinds of promises do people often make to children?

People often make small but meaningful promises to children, like buying them a toy, taking them to the park, or attending their school events. These promises may seem minor to adults, but for children, they are a big deal. Fulfilling such promises helps in building a child’s emotional security and trust in adults. If promises are broken repeatedly, children might become disappointed or even emotionally distant.

Is it ever okay to break a promise?

While promises should be kept, there are some situations where breaking one might be acceptable. For instance, if keeping a promise would harm someone or go against ethical values, it may be better to explain the situation honestly and withdraw. Also, in emergencies or unavoidable circumstances, people might not be able to keep their word. In such cases, communication and a sincere explanation are essential to maintain trust.

IELTS Speaking Test

How do promises affect relationships?

Promises play a crucial role in shaping relationships. They create a sense of security and reliability between people. When promises are kept, they strengthen the bond, whether it’s between friends, family members, or colleagues. On the contrary, repeatedly breaking promises can lead to disappointment, resentment, and eventually weaken the relationship. So, making realistic promises and honoring them is key to healthy interactions.
