One memorable occasion when my family asked for my help was about a year ago, during the wedding preparations for my elder sister. Weddings in my culture are elaborate events, often lasting several days and involving a lot of planning, organization, and attention to detail. Since it was a huge family affair, everyone had a role to play, and I was specifically asked to manage the guest list and coordinate transportation.

It all started about three months before the wedding date. My parents were feeling overwhelmed with the number of things that needed to be done—venue bookings, catering, decoration, guest accommodation, and so on. Since I have decent organizational skills and I’m quite tech-savvy, they asked me if I could help handle the guest logistics. More specifically, they needed me to create a digital guest list, track RSVPs, and arrange transportation for relatives coming from other cities.

I created a Google Sheet to manage the list and used Google Forms to collect RSVPs efficiently. I also booked mini-buses for group pickups and ensured that everyone knew the schedule in advance. Additionally, I coordinated with the hotel management where many guests were staying, so that check-ins went smoothly. It was a time-consuming process, but thankfully, everything went off without a hitch.

I must say, the whole experience was challenging but extremely rewarding. At times I felt a bit stressed, especially when some guests changed their plans last minute, but overall, I felt proud and fulfilled. It was satisfying to know that I could contribute meaningfully to such an important event in my sister’s life. Seeing my parents relaxed and my sister happy made all the effort worthwhile.

Helping my family in this way made me realize the importance of teamwork and responsibility. It also strengthened our bond because we worked together and supported each other throughout the process.

In your country, do family members help each other?

Yes, absolutely. In my country, family plays a central role in people’s lives, and it’s very common for family members to help each other in both big and small ways. Whether it’s looking after younger siblings, helping with household chores, or supporting each other financially, there’s a strong culture of mutual support and interdependence.

What kind of help do parents usually give to their children?

Parents often help their children in many aspects of life. They provide emotional support, financial assistance, and guidance in decision-making. For example, they may help children choose their career path, assist with college fees, or even help them find a job through personal connections. In many families, parents continue to offer help long after their children become adults.

Do you think children should be taught to help their parents?

Definitely. Teaching children to help their parents instills values such as respect, gratitude, and responsibility. Simple tasks like helping with cooking or cleaning can go a long way in building character. It also helps children understand the importance of contributing to the family unit rather than expecting everything to be done for them.

Do you think people are less willing to help others these days compared to the past?

That’s an interesting question. In some ways, yes. With people leading busier and more individualistic lives, especially in urban areas, community spirit may not be as strong as it was in the past. However, technology has also made it easier to offer and receive help—for example, through social media and crowdfunding platforms. So, while the methods of helping may have changed, the willingness is still there, especially during crises or emergencies.

IELTS Speaking Test

What are the benefits of helping family members?

Helping family members not only strengthens the emotional bonds within the family but also creates a sense of belonging and shared purpose. It teaches compassion, patience, and problem-solving skills. Moreover, when you help others, especially those close to you, it often brings personal satisfaction and boosts your self-worth.
