One time I changed my mind about something significant was when I decided not to pursue a career in engineering, even though I had been preparing for it for several years.

IELTS Speaking Test

From a young age, I had always been encouraged by my parents and teachers to choose engineering, mainly because it’s seen as a secure and prestigious career path in my country. I enrolled in science subjects in high school, took coaching classes, and even applied to engineering colleges.

However, during my final year of school, I attended a career counseling workshop organized by our school. One of the speakers was a graphic designer who spoke passionately about working in creative industries. That really struck a chord with me. I had always enjoyed drawing, digital art, and editing videos, but I had never seen them as potential career options.

I began researching more about design as a career and even took a few online courses in my free time. The more I learned, the more I realized that I was truly passionate about this field. Eventually, after much thought and discussion with my parents, I decided to withdraw my engineering applications and instead applied to a design college.

At first, I felt a bit uncertain and guilty, especially because it went against what my family had envisioned for me. But over time, as I started my design course and got involved in creative projects, I felt more confident and satisfied with my choice. It was a major decision, and I’m really glad I changed my mind when I did.

Do children change their minds easily?

Yes, children usually change their minds very easily because their opinions and preferences are still developing. They are highly influenced by their surroundings—whether it’s cartoons, classmates, or family members. For example, a child may say they want to become a doctor today and change it to an astronaut tomorrow just because they watched a space-related cartoon.

They’re naturally curious and eager to explore, so changing their minds frequently is part of their learning process. Unlike adults, children aren’t bound by long-term goals or responsibilities, which gives them more freedom to change their opinions often.

IELTS Speaking Test

Why do people change their decisions?

People change their decisions for various reasons. One major reason is access to new or better information. Sometimes, after making a decision, people come across facts or opinions that alter their understanding of the situation. Emotional factors also play a big role. For example, someone may initially decide to work abroad but later realize they can’t bear being away from their family and choose to stay.

Also, practical factors like financial issues, career opportunities, or health concerns can cause a person to rethink a choice. Changing one’s mind doesn’t always mean weakness—it often reflects maturity and self-awareness.

IELTS Speaking Test

Is it always good to change decisions?

Not always. Changing a decision can be a good thing when it’s based on careful thought and better insight. For instance, someone might realize a particular job doesn’t align with their long-term goals and decide to pursue a different path, which can lead to greater satisfaction in the future. However, constantly changing decisions without a valid reason can show instability or a lack of confidence. If a person keeps switching paths too often, they might struggle to achieve any concrete goals. So, while flexibility is important, it should be balanced with commitment and clarity of purpose.

Why do some people find it hard to change their minds?

There are several reasons for this. Firstly, personality plays a big role—some people are naturally stubborn or have a strong sense of pride, making it difficult for them to admit they were wrong or to accept alternative views. Secondly, societal or cultural expectations may pressure people to stick to their original choices, especially if they’ve announced them publicly. Additionally, the fear of failure or regret may stop someone from changing their decision, even when it’s necessary. In some cases, people may also lack self-confidence or worry about being judged by others for not staying consistent.

IELTS Speaking Test

What kind of decisions do people usually take more time to change?

People usually take more time to change decisions that have long-term consequences or involve emotional or financial investment. For example, decisions related to marriage, career choice, education, or buying a house are not taken lightly. These choices affect a person’s life for many years, so changing them requires careful evaluation, discussions with others, and sometimes even professional advice. On the other hand, people may change small decisions—like what to wear or eat—on a whim because the stakes are low.
