One recent trend in my country is the increasing popularity of plant-based or vegan diets. More and more people are shifting away from consuming animal products and are instead opting for plant-based alternatives such as soy milk, almond milk, tofu, and even plant-based meat substitutes.

This trend is particularly popular among young adults and health-conscious individuals living in urban areas. Many celebrities and influencers have also adopted and promoted vegan lifestyles, which has played a huge role in encouraging others to follow suit.

There are several reasons why this trend has gained momentum. Firstly, health awareness has grown significantly—people are becoming more informed about the benefits of a plant-based diet, such as lower cholesterol levels and a reduced risk of chronic diseases. Secondly, environmental concerns have prompted people to reduce their carbon footprint, as animal agriculture is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Lastly, the rise of social media has made it easier for trends to spread rapidly. Recipes, transformation stories, and documentaries are widely shared and often go viral.

Personally, I think it’s a positive trend. While I’m not vegan myself, I admire the commitment people show toward improving their health and protecting the planet. Plus, the availability of more vegan options means that even non-vegans like me can enjoy healthier meals from time to time. It’s a shift in the right direction, and I believe it’ll continue to grow in the coming years.

Why do some trends become popular more quickly than others?

Some trends gain popularity faster due to a combination of factors such as media exposure, celebrity endorsement, and ease of adoption. For instance, if a trend is heavily promoted on platforms like Instagram or TikTok, it can reach millions of people in a matter of hours. Trends that are visually appealing, affordable, and convenient tend to spread quickly because people can easily try them out without too much effort or expense.

On the other hand, trends that require a significant lifestyle change or financial investment, like adopting solar energy or buying electric vehicles, may take longer to catch on, even if they are beneficial in the long run.

Are trends always beneficial for society?

Not necessarily. While some trends have a positive social or environmental impact, such as sustainability movements or mental health awareness, others can be harmful, shallow, or even dangerous. For example, extreme diet trends can lead to health problems if not followed properly. Similarly, viral internet challenges may seem fun but can pose serious safety risks.

In my opinion, trends should be approached with a critical mindset. People should evaluate whether a trend aligns with their values and whether it’s sustainable and meaningful in the long term.

Do trends differ between younger and older generations?

Absolutely. Younger generations, especially teenagers and people in their twenties, are more likely to follow digital trends, fashion fads, and pop culture movements. They’re usually more tech-savvy and spend a significant amount of time on social media platforms, where most trends originate.

In contrast, older generations might be more conservative and slower to adopt new trends. They often value tradition and practicality over novelty. That said, some trends, like healthy eating or minimalist living, appeal to all age groups because of their universal benefits.

What role does social media play in spreading trends?

Social media is one of the most powerful drivers of modern trends. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube allow influencers and content creators to reach a global audience instantly. A single viral video or post can set off a new fashion style, a recipe challenge, or even a political movement.

Algorithms also play a big role—they show users content based on their interests, making it easier for certain trends to go viral within specific communities. Moreover, hashtags, stories, and reels amplify visibility and create a sense of urgency or fear of missing out, which encourages people to join in quickly.

Why do people feel pressured to follow trends?

There are several reasons. First, there’s the fear of being left out or judged, especially among teenagers and young adults. People often want to feel accepted and validated by their peers, and following a popular trend can provide that sense of belonging.

Second, there’s social comparison—when people see others looking good or succeeding through a trend, they feel the need to emulate them. Lastly, companies and advertisers also create a sense of urgency by suggesting that you’ll miss out if you don’t jump on the bandwagon.

Can following trends affect someone’s identity?

Yes, definitely. Trends can influence the way people dress, speak, eat, or even think. While trying out trends can be fun and help people explore different aspects of their personality, blindly following them can sometimes lead to loss of individuality.

It’s important to strike a balance—people should feel free to explore trends but also stay true to their core values and personal preferences. Otherwise, they might end up just imitating others instead of developing a unique identity.

Do companies benefit from trends? How?

Yes, companies often capitalize on trends to increase sales and brand visibility. For example, when plant-based diets became popular, many food companies started offering vegan options to attract health-conscious customers. Clothing brands do the same by quickly producing items that reflect current fashion trends.

Some companies even create trends through clever marketing campaigns, influencer partnerships, and limited-time offers. Essentially, being trend-aware allows businesses to stay relevant and maintain a competitive edge in a constantly changing market.
