One of the most memorable birthday parties I’ve ever had was my 18th birthday. It was a special occasion not only because I officially became an adult, but also because it was the first time I had a surprise party organized just for me.

My friends and family secretly arranged the celebration at a rooftop café in my city. I thought I was just going out for a regular dinner with my best friend, but as soon as I stepped into the venue, I was greeted with balloons, streamers, and a loud “Surprise!” from all the people I loved. The decorations were themed around my favorite movie, Harry Potter, which made it even more personal and heartwarming.
We celebrated with music, dancing, games, and of course, a beautiful cake that had a mini Hogwarts castle on top. There was also a photo booth and everyone was given funny props to click silly pictures. It felt like something straight out of a movie.
I remember that day so well because I wasn’t expecting it at all. I had never had a surprise party before, and the effort that went into planning every detail made me feel truly appreciated. What made it different from other birthdays was the fact that I didn’t have to plan a thing. Usually, I organize my own small get-togethers, but this time, everything was done for me, and it was genuinely touching.

Yes, people in my country definitely enjoy celebrating birthdays. It’s seen as a joyful occasion where family and friends come together to show love and appreciation. For children, parties often include decorations, games, cakes, and sometimes entertainers like clowns or magicians. Adults might opt for dinner with close friends or even travel to a special location. The trend of celebrating birthdays on a grand scale has grown, especially with the influence of social media, where people often share their celebration photos online. So, there’s a certain social element to it now—people like to make birthdays memorable and Instagram-worthy.
How do children celebrate birthdays in your culture?
Children’s birthdays are usually quite lively and colorful in my culture. Most parents organize parties either at home or in a rented venue like a banquet hall or a play zone. Themes are a big deal—for instance, kids might have a Spiderman or Frozen-themed party, complete with matching decorations, cakes, and even costumes. The parties typically include music, fun games, snacks, return gifts, and cake-cutting ceremonies. Sometimes, party planners are hired to manage everything. Compared to the past, when celebrations were more traditional and involved religious blessings and family meals, modern kids’ birthdays are much more eventful.

Do you think birthday celebrations are important?
Personally, I do believe birthday celebrations are important, though the scale of the celebration may vary. They’re not just about fun—they’re a great way to reflect on the past year, express gratitude, and spend quality time with loved ones. For children, birthday parties help them feel loved and valued. For adults, it can be a reminder to slow down and connect with people. Even a simple celebration can make someone feel appreciated. However, I also think it’s important to celebrate in a way that feels meaningful, rather than just for show or out of social pressure.
