How often do you use a computer?

Oh, I’m on my laptop at least 6 hours a day! As online IELTS instructor, it is invaluable. I use a laptop for everything from planning lessons to teaching over Zoom.  Not only do I use it for work, I also use it to keep in touch with my relatives living abroad. Right now, I’m living in Vietnam while my family live in Ireland, so I contact them by email or facebook messenger.

Do you think it is important to learn how to use a computer?

Definitely, nowadays computer literacy is vital.  A few decades ago, it was essential that one could read, write and do basic math. Although, these skills are still incredibly important, nowadays, I would say the ability to use various devices is even more valuable.

Do you have your own computer?

Fortunately, I do. I bought a laptop a few years ago. I choose to purchase a Macbook Pro as I’d heard lots of good reviews about that model. Because it cost a fortune, I was hesitant at first. I suppose this was because it was the latest model and included some cutting-edge features. However, I’ve had it for more than 3 years and it hasn’t shown any signs of age so I would definitely recommend this model to my friends.

How often do you cut your hair?

I tend to have my hair trimmed every three or four weeks. I used to have longer hair but it’s pretty short at the moment so it’s important that I get it cut regularly. Otherwise it looks messy and unprofessional. I usually go to a small barber shop that’s close to my house. The barbers there are really talented, I’d trust them with my life!

Why do people like to dye their hair?

As I see it, there are two main reasons people choose to have their hair dyed. First of all, everyone needs a change from time to time! I mean, people get bored of the same old colour. Actually, I’ve noticed that many young ladies have begun dying their hair bright colours like blue and pink. It’s a trend that seems to be catching on! Secondly, elderly people, both men and women tend to dye their hair to avoid looking old. I guess grey isn’t a youthful colour.

The thing I would like to remove is plastic packaging, especially single-use plastic, which is widely used in food and retail products.

I want to remove plastic packaging because it has a significant negative impact on the environment. Plastic takes hundreds of years to decompose, and in the meantime, it accumulates in landfills and oceans, harming wildlife and polluting natural ecosystems. Many animals mistake plastic for food, leading to injury or death. Additionally, the production of plastic contributes to carbon emissions and climate change.

Moreover, plastic packaging is a major source of waste in our daily lives. Despite efforts to recycle, much of it still ends up in the wrong places due to the complexities involved in recycling certain types of plastic. It is clear that finding alternatives to plastic packaging could be a crucial step toward reducing environmental harm.

IELTS Speaking Test

Do you think people are aware of the harmful effects of plastic packaging?

Yes, I believe there is growing awareness of the harmful effects of plastic packaging. More people are recognizing how much waste plastic generates and its contribution to environmental degradation. News stories, documentaries, and campaigns have helped inform the public about the devastating impact of plastic on marine life and wildlife in general. However, while many people are aware, not everyone is motivated to change their habits, partly due to convenience or lack of accessible alternatives.

What can individuals do to reduce their use of plastic packaging?

Individuals can take several actions to reduce their plastic usage. For example, they can carry reusable bags, containers, and bottles when shopping or dining out. They can also choose products with minimal or eco-friendly packaging, or buy in bulk where possible. Supporting companies and brands that prioritize sustainable packaging is another effective way to reduce plastic waste. Finally, people can educate others about the importance of reducing plastic use and encourage collective action.

IELTS Speaking Test

Do you think it’s possible to completely remove plastic packaging in the future?

Completely removing plastic packaging may be difficult, but it is possible to significantly reduce its use over time. Many companies are already adopting biodegradable or recyclable alternatives, such as paper, glass, or plant-based plastics. As technology advances, new sustainable materials may emerge that can replace plastic altogether. However, it will require collaboration between governments, businesses, and consumers to create a system that encourages sustainable packaging and reduces the reliance on plastic.

How do you think governments can help reduce plastic waste?

Governments can play a crucial role in reducing plastic waste by implementing stricter regulations on plastic production and disposal. They can introduce policies that encourage the use of eco-friendly materials and create incentives for companies to adopt sustainable packaging. Additionally, governments can invest in recycling infrastructure and promote public awareness campaigns about the importance of reducing plastic waste. Banning certain single-use plastics, like straws or bags, could also push businesses and consumers to adopt more sustainable alternatives.
