Do you play any sports?
Not as much as I should. I’m really busy with my job these days, so I don’t get the chance to do as many sports as I would like. I try to play basketball on Saturdays for a couple or hours and I occasionally play golf.
Have you played basketball for long?
Since I was about 10 years old. I remember playing a computer game about basketball when I was about 10 and it made me obsessed with the sport. From then on I played basketball every day until I went to university and then other things took priority, but I regret not maintaining it because it was something I loved doing.
Do you watch sport on TV?
Football is my favourite sport to watch on TV. I’m terrible at football but I love watching it on TV, especially big games like the Champions League. I follow Liverpool Football Club and so do a few of my friends, so we normally go the pub every weekend and watch whoever Liverpool are playing and a few of the other big games in the Premiership.

What is the most popular sport in your country?
In my country, there are two dominant sports Gaelic Football and Hurling. Gaelic is a little like soccer but you are allowed to pick up the ball with your hands and you can kick the ball over the bar for one point or in the goal for 3 points. Hurling is played with sticks and a smaller ball and involves hitting the ball over the bar or in the goal. Both of them are really fast-paced and a bit brutal at times. You can tackle someone much harder than you can in soccer.
How do people in your country stay fit?
We are blessed with beautiful countryside and a nice temperate climate so most people either go running or walking. Lots of young people play field sports, but more and more people are joining gyms. Gyms have really taken off recently as people worry more and more about their appearance. I think it has much more to do with how good people look rather than actually keeping fit.

Is it important for children to play sports?
Definitely. Sport not only keeps them healthy, but it also teaches them discipline and keeps them out of trouble. For instance, in my school, the kids who were dedicated to sport also achieved the highest grades in school and went on to good universities where they continued to work hard.

SAMPLE ANSWER
One of the most memorable pets I’ve had was a dog, specifically a Labrador Retriever. His name was Max, and he was a constant companion for several years. I remember getting him when he was just a puppy, and he grew into a big, playful, and loyal dog.
What I really liked about Max was his temperament. He was incredibly friendly, always excited to see people, and he had this infectious energy. No matter how bad my day was, coming home to him wagging his tail always lifted my spirits. He was also very intelligent and easy to train, so I didn’t have too many problems with obedience.
On the downside, one thing I didn’t like about Max was his shedding. Being a Labrador, he shed a lot, especially during the change of seasons. It meant I had to vacuum the house regularly, which could get quite tiresome. He also had a habit of chewing things when he was younger, which led to some broken furniture and shoes. However, these were minor inconveniences considering the joy he brought to our family.

In my country, which is India, dogs are quite popular as pets. Many families, especially in urban areas, keep dogs as companions. They’re seen as symbols of loyalty, and people often take them for walks or allow them to play in parks. In rural areas, though, dogs are often kept for more practical reasons, such as guarding homes or herding livestock.
As for what kind of animal makes a good pet, I believe it depends on the person’s lifestyle. Dogs, for example, are great for active individuals or families who enjoy outdoor activities, as they need exercise and attention. On the other hand, cats might be a better option for someone who prefers a more independent animal, as they usually don’t require as much attention or exercise. Smaller pets like hamsters or fish could be perfect for people with limited space or time.
Overall, I think a good pet should be one that fits well into the person’s daily routine and provides companionship without too much stress or responsibility.

PART – 3 FOLLOW UPS
Do you think pets can bring happiness to people’s lives? Why or why not?
Yes, I absolutely believe pets can bring happiness. They provide unconditional love, companionship, and emotional support. For many people, especially those who live alone, pets are a source of comfort and joy. They can also reduce stress and anxiety, as interacting with pets has been shown to release oxytocin, the “feel-good” hormone.
How do people generally care for their pets in your country?
In India, people generally care for their pets by feeding them well, providing them with regular health check-ups, and ensuring they have a safe and comfortable living environment. Many families take their pets to groomers and even send them to pet spas. In more urban areas, pet care services like pet sitting and training are also becoming more common. However, in rural areas, pets may not get the same level of attention, and they might be kept more for practical purposes like guarding or herding.

Are there any disadvantages to owning a pet?
Yes, there are some disadvantages to owning a pet. One of the main drawbacks is the time and effort required for their care. Pets, especially dogs, need regular exercise, attention, and sometimes even training, which can be time-consuming. There’s also the financial aspect—pets require food, medical care, and sometimes special grooming services. Additionally, pets can create messes, damage property, or require cleaning up after, which may not be ideal for everyone.
