IELTS Speaking Test
An unexpected present I received was a beautifully crafted leather journal. It wasn’t something I had asked for or even mentioned wanting, but when I opened it, I instantly recognized the thought and care that went into choosing it.
It was a gift from one of my close friends, Emily. We’ve been friends for years, and she’s always been very thoughtful when it comes to gifts, but this one was particularly surprising.
The reason Emily gave me this journal was that she knew I’ve been trying to get more into journaling and reflective writing. She had noticed me talking about my plans to start journaling, but I never really got around to it. She thought that the gift might inspire me to finally make it a habit, and it was her way of encouraging me to stay consistent with my writing goals.
I was genuinely touched when I received the journal. It wasn’t just a random gift—it showed that Emily had paid attention to something I had casually mentioned, and she had thoughtfully selected something that aligned with my personal interests. I felt a mix of gratitude and happiness, as it was both unexpected and meaningful.
At first, I was a little surprised because I didn’t expect anything from her, but the moment I opened the gift, I felt really appreciated. It made me want to start journaling right away, and I still use that journal to this day. It definitely strengthened our friendship and showed me how important it is to have people who truly understand you.

PART – 3 FOLLOW UPS
Do you think it’s better to receive gifts that are practical or those that are more sentimental?
I think both have their own merits, but personally, I value sentimental gifts more. While practical gifts are useful, sentimental gifts show a deeper understanding of the person and their preferences. When someone gives you a gift that resonates with your interests or emotions, it feels more personal and special. Of course, a practical gift that suits my lifestyle can also be appreciated, but I think it’s the thought and meaning behind a present that makes it memorable.
Do you enjoy giving presents? Why or why not?
Yes, I really enjoy giving presents. It’s not just about the gift itself, but about making the other person feel special. I take time to think about what the recipient would truly appreciate or need. Giving a gift that brings joy to someone else is incredibly rewarding, and it strengthens relationships. I think it’s a great way to show affection and care.
IELTS Speaking Test
How do you feel about receiving expensive gifts?
I don’t mind receiving expensive gifts, but I don’t think the price should be the focus. For me, the thoughtfulness behind a gift is far more important. If an expensive gift is given simply for the sake of its value, it may feel less meaningful. However, if the expensive gift is something that shows the giver truly knows me and what I like, then I would appreciate it much more. Ultimately, it’s the sentiment that counts.
What do you think is the best time to give a gift to someone?
I think the best time to give a gift is when it’s least expected. While birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays are traditional gift-giving occasions, surprising someone with a thoughtful gift on a random day can feel even more special. It could be after they’ve had a tough time, or when they’ve achieved something great. Unexpected gifts show that you’re thinking about them at any time, not just on special dates.
