IELTS Speaking Test
Do you like shopping for new clothes?
Yes Of course! I love shopping for new clothes. Buying clothes makes me happy and it is the only kind of shopping that I enjoy. I often go for shopping when I do some remarkable work and reward myself with new clothes.
About how much money do you spend on clothes a year?
I don’t remember the exact amount, but I think I usually spend around 10,000 to 15,000 Indian Rupees in a year on clothes and I believe that is the minimum amount that an Indian girl spends on her clothing.
Do people dress the same when they are depressed as they do when they are very happy?
I feel people dress up differently when they are in different moods. Such as when people are happy they wear bright and colourful clothes, and they actually try to look better than usual. For instance people are most happy when it’s their birthday or some family function, so they try to look best. On the other hand, when people are depressed, they don’t make many efforts to look good.

SAMPLE ANSWER
One film that I found really boring was The English Patient, which I watched about two years ago. It’s a romantic drama set during World War II and directed by Anthony Minghella. The story revolves around a severely burned man, who is being cared for in an Italian monastery. As he recounts his past, we learn about his affair with a married woman and the tragic events that led to his injuries. Throughout the film, there are several flashbacks and emotional moments, but the narrative is very slow and quite melancholic.
I found the film particularly boring for several reasons. First, the pacing was extremely slow, with long periods of silence and very little action. There were long scenes of people just staring at each other, and I often found myself losing focus. The plot also felt disjointed at times, with frequent shifts between the present and the past, which made it hard to stay engaged with the storyline. While some people might appreciate the depth of the characters’ emotions, I found the whole experience quite tedious, as it felt like it was dragging on for far too long.
Additionally, the lack of significant plot development left me frustrated. There wasn’t much happening for a lot of the film, and it didn’t seem to have a clear resolution until the very end. I know that The English Patient is considered a masterpiece by some critics, but for me, it felt more like an exercise in patience than an enjoyable cinematic experience.

PART – 3 FOLLOW UPS
Do you think people have different tastes when it comes to films?
Yes, definitely. People have very different preferences when it comes to films, and what one person finds boring or slow, another might find deeply moving or thought-provoking. Some people love action-packed blockbusters, while others enjoy slow, character-driven dramas or even experimental films. It’s all about what resonates with an individual’s personal taste, mood, and sometimes even the time and place in which they watch the movie.
What types of films do you enjoy?
I’m more of a fan of thrillers and science fiction films. I enjoy films that have a good mix of suspense, action, and clever plots. I’m also fond of fantasy films because they can offer a great escape from reality and let you experience something entirely new. The more imaginative, the better for me, as long as the plot is engaging and the pacing keeps me hooked.

What makes a film interesting to watch?
For me, a good film is one that keeps you engaged from start to finish. The pacing is important; it shouldn’t be too slow or drag on unnecessarily. The plot needs to be interesting and well-structured, with compelling characters that you can either relate to or find intriguing. Strong performances by the actors and good cinematography also play a big role in creating an immersive experience. Ultimately, I think a film should evoke some kind of emotion, whether that’s excitement, sadness, or even laughter. It should make you feel like you’ve experienced something worthwhile.
Do you think films have a significant impact on people’s lives?
Yes, films can have a profound impact on people’s lives. They can inspire us, challenge our beliefs, or even help us understand different perspectives. Films can reflect society’s values and struggles, and sometimes, they can even spark social change. For example, movies about important historical events or human rights issues often raise awareness and provoke conversation. On a personal level, films can also provide a source of comfort, entertainment, or an emotional outlet, depending on what someone is going through in their life.
