Let’s talk about your home town. Where were you born?

I was born in a place called Rochester in the Medway towns in Kent.

Do you still live in Rochester?

No, I haven’t lived in Rochester for a long time now, since I went to college. I live in London.

IELTS Speaking Test

Do most people like living in Rochester?

I guess they do. I always wanted to live in London, so… my family still live there, but I guess it’s a nice place.

Why?

Well, it’s got beautiful architecture and it’s the home of Dickens and so there’s quite a lot of historical interest there and you’ve got countryside nearby and it’s easily accessible for London.

Do you think you’ll stay in London?

Oh, I don’t know. I’ve been here for quite a while now and although I love it, I can’t imagine spending my whole life here.

I’d like to move on to talk about sport. What’s your favourite sport?

My favourite sport to watch is football, but to participate in, it’s swimming.

When did you first become interested in swimming?

Gosh, when I was a child, my dad used to take me swimming every week and I swam for my school.

How often do you participate in swimming now?

I try to swim at least two times a week.

What equipment do you need for swimming?

The great thing is that you don’t really need any equipment apart from goggles and trunks.

Where do you go swimming?

Anywhere I am. I love swimming in the sea but mainly I swim at my local pool.

Now, let’s move on to talk about shopping. How do you feel about going shopping?

I don’t mind going shopping. I like to know exactly what I’m going shopping for, though, I like to get in, buy it and go home again.

Do you like buying clothes or goods on the Internet?

I’ve never bought clothes on the Internet because I like to try them on before buying them but I’ve certainly bought electrical goods and other things on the Internet.

What don’t you like about shopping?

I don’t really like big crowds of people and fighting my way through them to get what I want. I guess I don’t like paying for it all.

One sustainable practice I’ve adopted is reducing single-use plastic. Specifically, I’ve made a conscious effort to use reusable shopping bags, water bottles, and containers instead of disposable plastic ones. I also try to avoid products with excessive plastic packaging whenever possible.

I started this practice because I became more aware of the environmental impact of plastic waste. I learned about how plastic pollution affects marine life and contributes to broader environmental issues. This realization was particularly driven by a documentary I watched on ocean conservation, which highlighted the massive amounts of plastic ending up in the ocean and harming wildlife. I felt a strong urge to contribute to reducing plastic waste in my own life to make a positive difference.

Adopting this practice has had several positive impacts on my life. Firstly, it has made me more mindful of my consumption habits and encouraged me to make more sustainable choices in other areas as well. For example, I’ve started buying products with minimal packaging and supporting brands that prioritize eco-friendly practices. Additionally, it has given me a sense of accomplishment knowing that my small efforts contribute to reducing plastic waste and helping the environment. On a practical level, using reusable items has also saved me money over time, as I no longer need to constantly buy disposable alternatives.

IELTS Speaking Test

How do you encourage others to adopt similar sustainable practices?

I encourage others to adopt similar sustainable practices by sharing my own experiences and the benefits I’ve observed. I often talk about how small changes can collectively make a big impact. For instance, I’ve organized a few informal workshops with friends and family to demonstrate how to use reusable alternatives effectively. Additionally, I share information and tips on social media to raise awareness and motivate others to make eco-friendly choices.

What challenges have you faced in maintaining this practice?

One challenge I’ve faced is the convenience of single-use plastics, especially when shopping for groceries or eating out. It can be difficult to avoid plastic packaging when many products are still sold this way. To address this, I’ve learned to plan ahead, bring my own containers when possible, and choose stores or restaurants that offer eco-friendly options. Another challenge is the occasional forgetfulness, like forgetting to carry my reusable bags, but I’ve found that keeping a few in my car or workplace helps mitigate this issue.

IELTS Speaking Test

Have you noticed any changes in your local community regarding sustainability?

Yes, I’ve noticed a growing awareness and adoption of sustainable practices within my local community. For example, more local businesses are offering reusable or biodegradable packaging, and there has been an increase in community recycling programs and clean-up events. Additionally, I’ve seen more people using reusable items and supporting environmental causes, which is encouraging and suggests a positive shift toward sustainability in our community.

How do you think individuals can make a bigger impact on environmental sustainability?

Individuals can make a bigger impact on environmental sustainability by integrating sustainable practices into various aspects of their lives. Beyond reducing plastic use, this can include conserving energy, supporting renewable resources, and choosing sustainable products. Additionally, advocating for policy changes, participating in community clean-ups, and educating others can amplify individual efforts. Collectively, these actions can lead to significant environmental benefits and drive broader societal changes.
