SAMPLE ANSWER
An aspect of modern society that I find quite unsettling is the pervasive trend of superficiality and materialism. This phenomenon is characterized by an excessive focus on wealth, appearance, and status as markers of success and happiness.
This trend is happening for several reasons. Firstly, with the rise of social media and digital communication, there’s been a profound shift towards presenting curated versions of ourselves to the world. People often showcase their material possessions, glamorous lifestyles, and physical appearances in an effort to gain validation and approval from others. This constant exposure to such displays can create a distorted perception of what constitutes a fulfilling life.
While materialism and superficiality are not new issues, they have certainly been amplified in the age of hyper-connectivity and instant gratification. The pressure to conform to societal standards of success and attractiveness has intensified, leading many to prioritize external markers of achievement over internal fulfillment and personal growth.
IELTS Speaking Test
I find this aspect of modern society disheartening primarily because it promotes a shallow and often unattainable ideal of happiness. It fosters a culture where people may measure their self-worth based on material possessions or social status rather than on qualities like kindness, empathy, or intellectual curiosity. This can contribute to increased anxiety, depression, and a sense of inadequacy among individuals who feel they don’t measure up to these artificial standards.
Moreover, the emphasis on materialism detracts from more meaningful pursuits such as relationships, creativity, and personal development. It perpetuates a cycle of consumption and comparison that can be exhausting and ultimately unfulfilling.
In essence, while there’s nothing inherently wrong with enjoying material comforts or presenting oneself in a positive light, the current emphasis on superficiality in modern society often comes at the expense of deeper human values and genuine connections. For these reasons, I dislike the pervasive influence of materialism and superficiality in shaping our societal norms and aspirations.

PART – 3 FOLLOW UPS
Why do you think income inequality has become more pronounced in modern society?
Income inequality has been exacerbated by several factors. Globalization and technological advancements have contributed to the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few, while automation and outsourcing have impacted job opportunities and wage growth for many. Additionally, changes in tax policies and economic structures have favored the wealthy, widening the gap between the rich and the poor.
Is income inequality a new issue, or has it been a problem throughout history?
Income inequality has existed throughout history, but it has become more pronounced in recent decades. While disparities in wealth have always been present, the scale and speed at which wealth can be accumulated today, coupled with structural changes in economies, have heightened concerns about inequality’s impact on social cohesion and economic mobility.
How does income inequality affect society as a whole?
Income inequality can lead to a range of social and economic issues. It can contribute to social unrest, as disparities in wealth and opportunity create divisions between different segments of society. Economically, it can hinder overall growth and stability, as wealth concentrated in the hands of a few may limit consumer spending and investment in public goods. Furthermore, inequality can perpetuate cycles of poverty and reduce upward mobility, impacting future generations’ opportunities.
