Best IELTS Reading Strategies

I have seen that internet is flooded with various information about all modules of IELTS some say to do this and other say to do that as a result aspirants get confused what to do and what not. I say you should go through all the viral tips and tricks and choose any according to your own comfort and caliber.

Today lets discuss some strategies which can enhance your scores but remember choose any one and get stick to it. Practice it on daily basis to master it.

Strategy 1

Read the entire reading passage first.

This strategy is for the person who is a fast reader and have sharp mind to remember the content for at least for 10 minutes and also have a good hand in vocabulary. In this technique read the entire passage quickly and then read the questions now when you have knowledge of both questions and passage try to locate the answers with what you have memorized from the passage.

In this technique if you forget where the answer in the passage was you have to read the passage twice. So try this strategy only if you are fast reader and can memorize the things quickly.

Strategy 2

Read the questions first

In this strategy it is advised to read the questions first and underline the keywords from them. Then start reading the passage I am not saying to read the whole text but only to scan the required information from the passage. As soon as you get to any word which is related to the question go back to the question and look whether it’s a suitable answer or not.

This technique sometime don’t work for fill in the blanks or when the answers are not in sequence so it can be bit difficult to find them.  This strategy might or might not work for you but you can practice this and check if this works for you and you could also do some tweaks to this and improve yourself better.

Strategy 3

In this strategy you have to summarize each paragraph. First read the topic sentence as it will give you an idea of the paragraph note this main idea. Now when you get the idea start reading the questions and try to find the questions relating to the topic and when you find any word relating to it go to the text and try to seek the answer. Perform this exercise for all the paragraphs.

This technique is complicated but if you will practice it you can master it and will be able to complete the test in time. The benefits of this technique is that-

– You read less

– You do it much quicker as you’ve already gone through the passage to write the summary points

– You are prepared for one of the question types that says “give a topic for each paragraph.” As you’ve already done the summary, it’s easy for you to frame a question from it which saves you a lot of time.

With Best Wishes!
