IELTS GENERAL WRITING TASK 1

You and your friend have recently purchased tickets for a theatrical performance in advance. However, you can’t make it due to some personal reasons. You have decided to apologise to your friend as you can’t make it to the theatre with him.

Write a letter to this friend. In your letter:

– apologies to him/her as you can’t go to the theatre

– explain why you can’t make it

– give options what can be done with the tickets

Model Answer:

Dear Mohan,

Hope you are in good health and spirit. I just wanted to offer you a quick apology for not being able to accompany you next Friday at the theatre in order to enjoy the performance we were planning to enjoy together. I hope you would accept my apology and I wish we will make it some other day.

I really wanted to enjoy the show with you since we planned for it so carefully, but I guess that the luck is not on our side! It’s just something important came up as I would need to spend the entire evening in my company factory next Friday in order to check a new shipment of products. The shipment was supposed to arrive the day after, but it looks like the shipping company is in a real hurry to deliver.

As for my ticket, I surely wouldn’t want it to go to waste. So, I would love to hand the ticket over to you so that you and John (your brother) can go and enjoy Friday’s performance. I am pretty sure that you and your brother are going to have a great time at the theatre next Friday! Just don’t you dare forget to share your experience with me later on!
