SAMPLE ANSWER
Dear Anne,
I’m writing to you about the book on birds that I borrowed from you about a month ago. It’s a fantastic book and I was using it for a class project. The problem is, I had it a couple of days ago, but now I can’t find it anywhere. I can’t think where it has gone because I haven’t taken it anywhere and it was on my desk, but it has just mysteriously disappeared.
I really am so sorry because I know it was one of your favourite books and you asked me to take good care of it. It must be somewhere in the house and I will continue my search, but in the meantime I have ordered another copy from my local bookshop. If I find the original copy that you lent me, I’ll return it to you immediately, but otherwise I’ll just have to wait for the new copy to come into the shop.
I feel so bad about the book being lost like this, and I really hope that it will turn up, but I just thought I’d let you know what has happened and that a replacement copy is on its way.
Regards,
