You received a gift that you don’t like. Write a letter to the person who gave it to you.

In your letter:

• Thank them for the gift

• Explain why it’s not suitable for you

• Suggest an alternative gift or way to celebrate next time

SAMPLE ANSWER

Dear J,

I hope you’re doing well. I just wanted to thank you sincerely for the gift you sent me for my birthday — the woollen scarf was a thoughtful gesture, and I truly appreciate your kindness.

However, I wanted to mention, very politely, that I live in a warm coastal city where the temperature rarely drops, even in winter. So, unfortunately, I won’t get much use out of a winter scarf. I understand it was chosen with love, and I feel a bit awkward bringing this up, but I thought you should know for future reference.

Next time, instead of a gift, maybe we could celebrate by going out for lunch or spending the day together. That would mean a lot more to me, and we’d get a chance to catch up properly.

Thanks again for thinking of me. I’m really grateful for your friendship.
