GENERAL WRITING TASK 1

You are experiencing financial problems and want to ask your landlord if you can pay your rent late for the next two months.

Write a letter to your landlord.

In your letter:

– explain why you are writing to him/her

– why you cannot pay the rent in time

– when you will pay the rent

SAMPLE ANSWER

Dear Mr. Lucas,

Hope this letter finds you in good health and spirit. I am writing this letter to let you know that due to some financial problems, I will be late to pay my apartment rent for the next two months.

Currently, I am going through some financial difficulties because of some emergency family crisis. On top of that, my company, where I am employed now, is also a bit out of shape financially because of suffering some unexpected but huge loss in the last quarter of the financial year. As a result, my company has told us in advance that it won’t be able to pay our salaries to us on time for the next couple of months.

By the way, in my defence, since I moved to your apartment about a couple of years ago, I have never been late in paying the rent, let alone skipping any rent for any month. In fact, if anything, I have actually paid all my rents well in advance of the scheduled time.

Therefore, based on my current financial situation and my previous good records in paying all the rents on time, I would like to request you to please allow me some extra time in paying the rents of the next two months.

Yours sincerely,

Rahul Bhatia
