IELTS GENERAL WRITING TASK 1

You have read about a scholarship offered by a university and wish to apply. Write a letter to the university and include the following information:

– the scholarship you wish to apply for

– some details about yourself

– your academic suitability for the scholarship

and any other relevant information.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to you regarding the Hunt Scholarship, which is awarded annually to a student of history at your university. . I am currently in the first year of my B.A. in History at your university. I would like to apply for this scholarship due to unforeseen financial constraints which may otherwise force me to abandon my studies.

I am sure you will agree that I have contributed to extra-curricular activities at this university. I play on the football team which got to the final of the University Cup this season. I also run Marathons and will represent the university in this event at the forthcoming University Athletics Meeting.

I have performed well academically, with very good grades so far (five grade ‘A’s and one grade ‘B’). I admit that it will be hard to maintain that standard next year, but I am confident in my ability to deal with the workload. As you can see from the enclosed reports, my tutors share my confidence.

I am sure you will give my application due consideration. I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.
