IELTS GENERAL WRITING TASK 1

You recently discovered that there are plans to construct an airport in your locality. Write a letter to the local authority. In your letter, you should tell:

-explain how you knew about the plans

-describe the negative effect of the construction on your neighbourhood

-suggest a possible solution to the problem.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my concern about the recent plan to construct a new airport in our locality. I came to know about this project through a local newspaper article published last week, which mentioned that the construction is expected to begin early next year.

While I understand the need for better transport facilities, I believe this project could negatively affect our neighbourhood. The constant noise from aircraft will disturb residents, especially students and elderly people. Moreover, the construction will likely increase traffic congestion and air pollution, reducing the overall quality of life in our community.

I would like to suggest that the authorities consider building the airport a few kilometres away from the residential area, where there is ample open land. This would minimize the disturbance to local residents while still achieving the city’s development goals.
