IELTS GENERAL WRITING TASK 1

A new neighbour has moved in next door and has taken your main rubbish bin.

Write a letter to your new neighbour requesting that they return the item. In the letter:
– Explain that new bins must be sourced from the local council
– Request that the person returns your bin immediately
– Inform the person of what further actions you will take should they not return your bin

SAMPLE ANSWER

Dear Neighbour,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to bring to your attention a small issue regarding my main rubbish bin, which I believe may have been mistakenly taken by you after your recent move into the neighbourhood.

Each household in our area is provided with a bin registered to its specific address, and replacements can only be requested directly from the local council. Since the process of obtaining a new one can take several weeks, I would be grateful if you could kindly return my bin as soon as possible.

If the bin has been taken unintentionally, I completely understand. However, I would appreciate it if you could return it by the end of this week. If not, I will have to report the matter to the local council for further action.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. I look forward to resolving this matter amicably.
