IELTS GENERAL WRITING TASK 1

A tree in your neighbour’s garden is growing into your property and causing problems.

Write a letter to your neighbour. In your letter:

– Describe the problem

– Explain how it is affecting you

– Suggest what could be done

SAMPLE ANSWER

Dear Mr. Thompson,

I hope this note finds you well. I’m writing to bring to your attention an issue concerning the large tree in your back garden, which has started to extend into my property.

The branches are now overhanging my fence and blocking sunlight from reaching my vegetable patch. Additionally, falling leaves and twigs are clogging my guttering, which has led to water overflow during recent rains. I’ve also noticed some roots pushing up against my garden path, which may soon cause structural damage.

I completely understand trees can grow quickly, and this likely went unnoticed. However, I’d greatly appreciate it if you could consider having the branches trimmed and perhaps inspecting the roots to prevent further intrusion. I’d be happy to discuss this further or recommend a local tree specialist if needed.
