IELTS GENERAL WRITING TASK 1

You are studying English at a private language school attended by many international students. You are planning a surprise birthday party for a friend who has been feeling particularly sad and homesick. Write to another classmate and invite him/her to the party.

In your letter:

– explain the reason for the party

– give the date and time of the party

– suggest what the classmate could bring to the party

SAMPLE ANSWER

Dear [Classmate’s Name],

I hope you’re doing well! I’m writing to invite you to a surprise birthday party that I’m planning for our friend, [Friend’s Name]. As you might have noticed, [Friend’s Name] has been feeling quite sad and homesick lately, and I thought a little celebration would be a great way to lift their spirits and make them feel more at home here.

The party will be held on [Date] at [Time] at my place, [Your Address]. I’m planning a cozy gathering with some of our friends from the class, and it would be wonderful if you could come and join in the fun! Please keep it a secret so that we can really surprise [Friend’s Name]!

As for what you could bring, it would be lovely if you could contribute something small—maybe a snack or dessert that you enjoy. Alternatively, if you’re good at making a birthday card, that would be a nice personal touch for [Friend’s Name].

I’m really looking forward to seeing you there and making this a special day for [Friend’s Name]!
