IELTS GENERAL WRITING TASK 1

One of your friends plans to go sightseeing in your country. You used to live in a place that you think she might enjoy visiting.

Write a letter to your friend. In your letter you should:

– briefly describe the attractions of this place

– recommend accommodation

– and suggest what he/she should take.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Dear John,

Thank you for your letter. I am so glad to hear that you have finally decided to pay a trip to America. As you know, I used to live in Las Vegas. I think you’ll like the casinos there, but be careful not to lose much money! The nightclubs are really worth visiting as they often have great shows. I also suggest that you take a trip to Death Valley. Many tour operators offer day trips there.

Accommodation in Las Vegas can be very expensive, but there is a reasonably priced hotel on Main Street called the Palace Hotel. It’s very near the main casino and nightclub area, so you’ll also save money by walking rather than taking a cab.

As you can imagine, Las Vegas will be very hot during the day and warm even at night, so you only need to take light clothes with you. However, it’s worth taking a sweater just in case. Take a pair of sunglasses and a hat, particularly if you decide to go to Death Valley. I’d recommend taking traveller’s checks because if they are lost or stolen, you can get them replaced easily. Lots of restaurants and entertainment venues also accept them.
