IELTS GENERAL WRITING TASK 1

You have booked a holiday for a member of your family and yourself. Unfortunately, your family member cannot now go with you.

A friend of yours may be interested in the trip.

Write a letter to him/her explaining

– the situation briefly

– describing the holiday and inviting him/her to go with you.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Dear Mary,

As you know, I planned to go on holiday to New Zealand with my brother this autumn. Unfortunately, my brother will not now be able to go since he has recently been promoted at work and cannot afford to take time off. You said that you have wanted to go to New Zealand for a long time and I was wondering whether you would like to join me on this trip. Let me try to convince you with a brief description of the holiday we booked.

We have booked a flight to Auckland on 3 rd September, with a return flight on 25th September. We planned to drive from Auckland to some of the more interesting towns in New Zealand and to visit some of the nature reserves along the coast and in the mountain areas of the south island. We have booked accommodation in advance for most nights, but have deliberately left room for flexibility in our programme in case we find a place that’s particularly nice or interesting.

I truly hope that you will be able to make this trip with me.
