IELTS GENERAL WRITING TASK 1

You recently stayed at your friend’s place to look after the house while he/she is away. You accidentallydamaged something in his/her house. Write a letter to your friend. In your letter you should describe

– what the accident was

– explain when it happened

– suggest how you damage can be fixed.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Dear [Friend’s Name],

I hope you’re having a great time during your trip. I wanted to write to you about something that happened while I was staying at your house, and I feel really bad about it.

While I was looking after your place, I was cleaning the kitchen late yesterday afternoon. I accidentally knocked over a glass vase that was on the countertop. It fell to the floor and unfortunately broke into several pieces. I was shocked and immediately cleaned up the mess to avoid any further damage.

I know this vase was special to you, and I deeply regret the accident. To fix the situation, I looked up some local repair shops that specialize in restoring broken glassware, and I’m happy to take the vase to one of them. Alternatively, if you’d prefer, I can also replace the vase with something similar. Please let me know how you’d like me to proceed.

I truly apologize for the accident, and I want to make sure everything is sorted out before you return. Let me know what you think, and I’ll take care of it as soon as possible.
