Community Urban Gardening Project
The Eastfield Community Urban Gardening Project is a volunteer-based initiative launched in March 2023 with the aim of converting unused urban spaces into productive green areas. Located on Riverside Street, the garden is managed by the Eastfield Residents’ Association and open to anyone who lives in the Eastfield district.
What the Project Offers
Residents can adopt a garden bed to grow fruits, vegetables, or herbs of their choice, using organic methods. The garden also features a tool shed, a rainwater collection system, and composting bins, all accessible to registered members. Seasonal workshops are held to teach topics like soil health, organic pest control, and vertical planting techniques.

Volunteers are required to commit to a minimum of two hours per week, either gardening or helping with maintenance. Children are welcome but must be supervised by a parent or guardian.
Who Can Join?
Anyone aged 16 or above residing in Eastfield can register. Registration is free but spaces are limited to 40 plots, and priority is given to households without access to private gardens. Once registered, members receive a gardening schedule and are expected to attend the monthly planning meeting.
Why Get Involved?
Participants report increased physical activity, better nutrition, and stronger connections with neighbours. Many also enjoy the satisfaction of growing their own food. To register, visit www.eastfieldgarden.org/join.
