EARTHQUAKE SAFETY PROCEDURES
Issued on 13 June 2016
The following safety tips can make a life-saving difference at the time of an earthquake. Invest in personal safety by reading the points below and acting accordingly in the wake of an earthquake.
Safety Procedures
In the office or residential interiors:
1. If you are inside a building (office or residence), find a strong table and take cover under it to avoid falling debris. If your furniture shifts during the quake, move along with it.

2. Corners and wall linings are the safest. Remain along the inner edge of the wall or corridor. The inner structural frame of the buildings is doubly reinforced, which makes the collapse of these structures less likely.
3. Try to brace yourself for impact by curling up in the corner of the room. It will help you avoid grievous injuries.
4. Ensure that the place where you are taking shelter has sufficient airspace, which would enable you to breathe in case the structure collapses.

5. Stay away from windows and doors.
6. Do not seek refuge under shelves, cabinets or any other furniture which may get loosened from the fixtures and may topple and cause injury.
7. Take care to avoid any falling objects, such as plaster, bricks, pots, pans and light fixtures.
8. Cover your head and body with pillows, blankets or even tablecloths to prevent injury.
9. Do not rush outside when the earthquake strikes. Remain on the same floor. If that is unavoidable or unsafe, choose exit points carefully. Avoid using the elevator as you are likely to get trapped midway if the power goes off, or directly exposed to fire if it does break out. Elevators do have these warning notices at the entry.
11. Wait for a clearance announcement to move out into the open.

In the open or exteriors:
1. If you are outside in the premises, do not try to run inside.
2. If you are in a moving vehicle, stop and park it in the closest sheltered place. There are four such points in the factory, two of which are near the entrance and two others near the exit.
3. Be watchful of fallen power lines as there is a high probability of these wires being live, which could cause serious injuries or even electrocution.
4. Remain calm, as the presence of mind is imperative not only to your safety but also to handle any emergency promptly.
