ACADEMIC WRITING TASK 1:-

The table below summarizes some data collected by a school canteen for the month of Marsh. Write a report summarizing the sales figures of various types of eatables, based on the information shown, in the table.

Sample Answer:-

The table shows the sales figures of chocolates, chips and soft drinks in a school canteen for the month of March.

The figures are divided into two groups: Sales to non-member visitors and to permanent members. The figures for non-member visitors comprise sales to school staff, school students and outside visitors. School staff bought 332 soft drinks, 44 chocolates and 29 packets of chips. School students bought 1,249 soft drinks, 194 packets chips and 31 chocolates. More soft drinks were sold to school students than to any other group of customers. Although no chocolates were sold to outsiders, they purchased 122 packets of chips and 82 soft drinks.

Permanent members bought more chocolates (76) and chips packets (942) than other customers. On the other hand, soft drinks sales to permanent members (33) were fewer than for any other type of customers.

The total number of eatables sold for the month was 3,134 – 1,474 to school students, 405 to staff, 204 to outsiders and 1,051 to permanent members. Of this figure, 151 items were chocolates and 1,287 were chips packets. Therefore, soft drinks accounted for the highest sales figures (i.e. 1,697).

WRITING TASK 2 (AC+GT):-

More and more qualified people are moving from poor to rich countries to fill vacancies in specialist areas like engineering, computing and medicine. Some people believe that by encouraging the movement of such people rich countries are stealing from poor countries. Others feel that this is only part of the natural movement of workers around the world.

What is your opinion? Do you think rich countries should pay poorer counties for people they encourage to come? What other measures could rich countries to encourage qualified people to stay and help develop their own countries?

The so-called “brain drain” from poor to rich countries mow robbing poorer countries of essential personnel like doctors, nurses, engineers, and the trend is set to continue, if not to get worse.

Some people say this movement of people around the world is not a new phenomenon. Migrant workers have always been attracted by the wider choice of employment and greater opportunity in major cities in their own countries and abroad. Recently, as the technological age has advanced and as richer countries find themselves with not enough workers to feed their development, they have had to turn to other parts of the world to find the necessary manpower. Many richer European countries, for example are now trying to attract skilled IT workers from my home country India by offering higher salaries than they could hope to earn at home. With the globalization of the world economy, many people feel that the process cannot be stopped.

Others, myself included, are of the opinion that measures should be taken to address the problem, by compensating poorer countries financially for the loss of investment in the people they have trained, like doctors and nurses. Admittedly, this may be cumbersome to administer, but an attempt could be made to get it off the ground. Another step, which in part has already begun to happen, is to use the forces of globalization itself. Western countries could encourage people to stay in their own countries by direct investment in projects like computer factories or by sending patients abroad for treatment, as is already happening.

It is obviously difficult to restrict the movement of people around the world and it is probably foolish to try to stop it. But attempts should be made to redress the imbalance.

I am a student as I have recently completed my senior secondary education with medical stream.

Are you fond of bags?

Yes I am fond of bags. I like to buy a new backpack or laptop case every now and then. There are many options available in the market these days, which prompt me to keep changing the bag that I use. Bags are not just a utility item to me, but also a style statement. I think a good bag can add to the personality of the one carrying it.

Have you every purchased a handbag for anyone?

Yes, I remember purchasing a beautiful brown leather handbag for my mother when I was only 12 years old. I had saved up my pocket money for a few months leading up to her birthday, and found a bag that would suit her style and taste. The bag had many sections inside and a few handy side pockets as well. It was very hardy, too, and lasted a good few years.

What are some tips for selecting a bag for gifting?

The first thing to keep in mind while buying a bag is the gender of the person for whom the bag is being purchased. For woman, handbags and purses are more suitable, while for men, laptop bags, messenger bags, and backpacks are ideal. Then, the choice of fabric is also important. Some people may be very fond of leather, while others may be completely averse to animal products. So, one must know the taste of the person for whom the bag is being purchased. While gifting a bag, one should also keep in mind the age of the receiver, and buy suitable colours to suit their personality.

Are children’s bags different from adults’ bags?

Yes, children’s bags are quite different from the bags that adults use. Children prefer bags which are more colourful and striking. They often go for multi coloured bags, or bags depicting their favourite superheroes and cartoon characters. These days it is easy to find school bags and hand bags for children, with any cartoon character of their choice. The quality of children’s bags has also improved a lot in the last decade.

I am a resident of Moga city, although, it’s a small town but it encompasses all the basic amenities needed by its populace. The only recent development that made the lives of the city dwellers much interesting is a shopping mall, named Vishal Mega Mart, which opened last year. Speaking of the location, it’s situated right in the heart of the city which is also within a stone’s throw of my house, so I often go there on weekends to unwind after work.

This modern shopping mall about this store is its bookstore which constitutes huge collection of books and stationery. It’s actually a relaxing reading heaven where the dream of bookworms like me can come true. In addition to it, this mall bestowed great benefits to not only Moga dwellers but people residing in the nearby cities. One can spend quality time with family and friends as nowadays people have hectic roaster, consequently the mall acts as a stress-buster for them. A lot of people are tied up with working and studying, therefore, this place can become their regular haunt to let off steam and recharge their batteries. As a whole, I can say that this development has improved the quality of residents significantly.

What measures should be taken to deal with damages on public facilities?

There are quite a few solutions that could be applied. Firstly, government should impose stricter punishments on those who damage public facilities. Secondly, it can also be done that instead of punishments, the authorities should simply provide more financial support to help renovate and refurbish outdated facilities.

What facilities do young people and old people like in your country?

Umm, old people prefer quite places like parks or libraries because they admire tranquil environment. Meanwhile, young people love exciting and crowded places like malls or studies as they are more interested in having a good time or hanging out with friends.

What is the difference between facilities in the countryside and ones in the city?

Public facilities are often better in urban areas in terms of construction of roads, academics whereas these amenities are yet to develop in remote areas.
