Following is a schematic diagram linking stresses to increased levels of co2, (higher sea surface temperature and ocean acidification ), storms and local stress factors to coral reefs, selected eco system services provide by reefs, and human dependence on these ecosystem.

SAMPLE ANSWER

In a broad sweep, this conceptual diagram describes the stresses caused on the ecosystem due to elevated levels of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere, the rising surface temperature and the acidification of oceans. It also shows how these factors, along with cyclones and local stresses on coral reefs, ultimately affect humans.

The diagram flows from bottom to top and contains 4 horizontal sections. The first section shows the events that cause threats, the second shows their impact on ecology, and the third shows how they disrupt facilities offered by our ecosystem. Finally, the diagram goes on to show how human beings suffer on account of these changes.

Moving on to the details, the principal cause mentioned in the diagram is increased level of atmospheric carbon dioxide, which in turn leads to the acididfication of oceans and the increased surface temperature. These conditions bleach coral reefs and prevent their growth, besides impeding creation of new coral reefs. The degeneration of coral reefs, which are natural protectors of the coastlines, leads to 2 adverse conditions – it destroys the habitat of fishes, and it can no longer protect the coasts against sea waves and a surge in sea levels.

Finally, this reduces the availability of fish, thus adversely affecting the livelihood of fishermen and reducing nutrition. It also leads to the flooding of coastal areas and the loss of habitat for humans.

To sum up, the illustration lucidly depicts the adverse effects of CO₂ and its extremely pernicious impact on the human civilization.
