Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons wherever relevant
SAMPLE ANSWER
This chart shows the relative positions of the species that face extinction, between 2004 and 2015. The information covers 5 classes of living beings in the animal kingdom and also, plants. The data has been given as percentage of the total population of the group by way of 2 horizontal bar graphs for each category, respectively denoting the positions in 2004 and 2015. The chart also gives the numbers of species catalogued up to 2015.
If we look at the overall numbers first, there are as many as 307,800 species of plants. And among the 5 classes of animals, Group 5 have the largest variety with 33,000 species. Group 2, with 5,400 species, have the least variety closely followed by Group 1 (6,900), Group 4 (9,500) and Group 3 (10,000)..
The bar graph shows that the percentage of endangered plants has increased from 2 to 3 over the given period. Among animals, Group 1 has suffered the most, with the percentage of endangered species going up from a mere 4% to a whopping 27%. Group 5 (3% to 7%) and Group 4 (4% to 8%) show significant decline as well. Among the 5 categories of animals covered by this chart, Group 2 has been the most fortunate – a number of species (3% out of 24%) among them was taken off the endangered list by 2015.
To sum up, 11 years is a short period of time, perhaps of as much significance as the blink of an eye on the evolutionary time scale. It is alarming that such a huge number ofspecies – which would have evolved over millions of years – have become extinct during this period possibly because of the loss of habitat and climate change. On the other hand, the chart also carries a ray of hope – the situation has improved for Group 2. Let us hope that this disturbing trend of extinction can be brought under control and the earth’s biodiversity is not allowed to deteriorate any further.
