The table illustrates the changes in recorded crime rates before and after the installation of CCTV systems across seven areas between 2016 and 2018.
Overall, most areas experienced a decline in crime rates after CCTV installation, with the most significant drop observed in car parks. Crime in car parks decreased dramatically by 73%, from 794 incidents to just 214. Similarly, the city suburbs and Cambrook saw notable reductions of 28% and 10%, respectively.
Smaller decreases were recorded in Shirehill and Council Estate, both witnessing around a 10% drop. In contrast, Marham experienced an 18% increase in crime despite the introduction of CCTV, while North Borough showed a marginal rise of 0.3%, indicating no significant effect.
In summary, while CCTV appears effective in most locations, especially in car parks and city suburbs, its impact was inconsistent, with some areas even reporting an increase in crime.
