The diagram shows the consumption of renewable energy in the USA from 1949-2008. Write a 150-word report for a university lecturer identifying the main trends and making comparisons where relevant

SAMPLE ANSWER

The charts below depict the usage of Renewable Energy in the USA at the time period of 1949 to 2008.

Overall, the consumption increased significantly, more than two times at the end of 2008. The wood and hydroelectric power fluctuated during the period of time, while the wind and biofuels remained flat but increased significantly at the end of the period.

For the first 25 years, the consumption of wood was stable then increased significantly in 1975 and reached its peak in 1985 with 2.3 Quadrillion Btu. In the following years, the wood energy continued to decrease until 2008. Hydroelectric power also showed a similar pattern to wood energy. For the first ten years, the number consumption was stable and continued to increase since 1960. In 1985, hydroelectric power also reached its peak with a total consumption of around3 Quadrillion Btu and after that, it continued to fluctuate with the down pattern.

Biofuels and wind energy started to be consumed in 1980. For almost 20 years wind and biofuel utilization remained flat, but in 2000 these usage started to increase drastically. At the end of the period, the number of biofuels reached around one Quadrillion Btu while the wind energy only 0.5 Quadrillion Btu.
